US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson.

According to USNI News , the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), along with Carrier Air Wing 2 (CVW-2), cruiser USS Princeton (CG-59), destroyer USS Sterett (DDG-104), and replenishment oiler USNS Guadalupe (T-AO-200) passed through the Strait of Malacca on July 16. The group then passed through the Singapore Strait and entered the South China Sea.

AIS recorded the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer JS Asahi (DD-119) near the USS Carl Vinson strike group in the Strait of Malacca, but it is unclear whether the ship is on the same route as the US strike group. JS Asahi is returning to Japan after completing an anti-piracy mission in the Middle East.

It is unclear how long the Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group will remain in the South China Sea and whether it plans to visit any ports. The Carl Vinson departed San Diego Naval Base on November 18, 2024, for a deployment to the Indo- Pacific .

As of July 17, the task force had been operational for 241 days, including three months of operations in the Middle East region under the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
