Japan: 5 Coast Guard crew members missing

The Japan Coast Guard said on January 2 that it is investigating the possibility that one of its planes collided with a Japan Airlines plane, causing the plane carrying 379 passengers to burst into flames on the runway at Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

NHK (Japan) reported that 5 out of 6 crew members on the Coast Guard plane are missing and only 1 person has escaped.

The plane was en route to Niigata Airport to provide relief to the earthquake-hit Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture.

Meanwhile, Japan Airlines said all 379 passengers on the burning plane were safely evacuated.

As reported, on January 2, a Japan Airlines plane caught fire while on the runway at Haneda Airport, in Ota, Tokyo.
