Modern journalism, easy and difficult!

The demands of multimedia communication are requiring journalists to adapt to many new conditions. Therefore, modern journalism, although easy to look at, is actually very difficult to practice.

Mr. Tran Dinh Hoa, former Chief Representative of Dan Tri Newspaper in the Central region, shared that in more than 10 years of being in charge of editing, he has approached many new things in journalism, especially online journalism. Compared to the past, when he was a reporter with a pen and a camera, the requirements to update and innovate working style and thinking are very complicated. And current journalists have to endure even more pressure.

“Today’s journalism is not just about going, listening, copying and writing. Modern journalism requires a lot of coordination, updating multimedia between speaking, writing and images; diverse criteria and competition, how to set titles, what keywords are attractive; and reporters often have to put articles into the editorial tool themselves, meeting technical requirements,” Mr. Hoa described.

Even with large newsrooms, a large number of reporters and articles, and the pressure of competition to report news, articles do not stop at events and the nature of the issue, but must also quickly discover valuable details and satisfy the "views" of readers to get royalties. All of this requires effort and dedication from young writers.

Journalism today requires a greater combination of skills and techniques.

Like Mr. Hoa, many veteran journalists share their concerns about the value that today's journalists bring to their work. Many current articles are often written very roughly, purely following current events and "hot" issues, without highlighting the stories better for readers. Even some reporters who are familiar with the work and have experience, the content of their articles is not rich, the handling of the topics is also less accurate, and the overview does not create many excellent journalistic works.

Journalist Ngo Quy Nhon, former Editor-in-Chief of Da Nang Newspaper, once acknowledged that the writing ability of young journalists today exists but is often not deep, because the conditions for approaching issues and the angles of exploitation that the editorial offices set are not bold. The pen of young journalists, not because of more favorable working conditions than previous generations, but because their faith in the profession has not been honed.

It must be seen that Vietnamese revolutionary journalists in the past have always been companions of the cutting-edge activities of social history. Journalists not only pioneer in seeing the pressing, concerning issues in life, not only point out the shortcomings and obstacles in the fields of monitoring, but also have the experience to transform the discovered issues into life questions, propose necessary solutions to suggest solutions to the problems. In particular, revolutionary journalism with an optimistic spirit as the main theme will always seek better, more effective factors and issues, images and stories that create positive emotions from readers and from social awareness.

This, in contrast to modern journalism in recent years, the nature of criticism and criticism is emphasized but not accompanied by the criteria of contribution, but tends to expose cases of violations and deviations. This is a very dangerous loophole in journalism, easily leading to collusive relationships, compromises, using the revolutionary nature of journalism as a tool for profiteering and social negativity. Many journalists have fallen into this wrong path to the point of paying a serious price. The consequence of this situation is that a part of the press increasingly goes into negative exploitation, losing its own value.

Obviously, the sensitivity and professional responsibility of journalists are necessary requirements. The more they face life, the more alert young journalists must be, because this is an extremely big challenge for them. Always keeping the passion for the profession and maintaining professional ethics are extremely necessary requirements for journalists, especially in the current turbulent times...
