As one of the households with many years of experience in growing pineapples, Mr. Tran Duy Tu's family (village 1) has 15 hectares of honey pineapples, of which about 8 hectares have been harvested. This year, his family has taken good care of the plants, and with favorable weather, the pineapples have few pests and diseases, and produce large, uniform, beautiful-colored fruits, which are highly appreciated by traders.
Thanks to their technical knowledge, the family often chooses large, healthy trees to produce fruit out of season so that the pineapples do not ripen all at once, avoiding the situation of stockpiling, price pressure and easy spoilage of the fruit. With this method, the family has pineapples harvested sporadically throughout the year, selling at high prices.
The peak pineapple harvest season is from March to June (solar calendar) every year. On average, about 35 tons of fresh fruit are harvested per hectare; for the area of young pineapple (harvested in the first year), the yield is more than 40 tons of fruit per hectare. In the recent harvest, ripe fruit weighing 1.8 kg or more was sold by the family for 20,000 - 21,000 VND/fruit; old green pineapple weighing 700g or more was sold for 7,000 VND/kg. Each pineapple harvest, his family has an average profit of 150 million VND/ha; for the area of young pineapple, the profit is up to 250 million VND/ha.
Farmers in Yang Mao commune harvest pineapples on the hillsides. |
Mr. Tu happily shared: “Pineapple has become the family's main crop for many years now, because growing pineapple is much more effective than other short-term crops. This type of plant is easy to grow, requires little capital, and is harvested quickly. Each tree bears fruit after about 15 months of planting. It is harvested continuously for about 4-5 years, and only when the pineapple yield gradually decreases must it be replanted. From April 2024 to now, the price of pineapple has always been high, with traders buying in crowded areas and not being forced to lower prices like in previous years. Both large and small fruits are purchased, and there are times when they are very "in demand" and cannot be supplied to traders, so people are very excited."
People of Yang Mao commune are happy because of the bumper pineapple season. |
Not only Mr. Tu's family, many households in the commune are also excited about the successful pineapple crop. Ms. Tran Thi Len's family (village 2) has 5 hectares of pineapple. In the recent harvest, her family had 4 hectares for harvest, averaging more than 30 tons of fresh fruit/ha. The family harvested simultaneously, selling old green fruit at a higher price than last year. Specifically, at the beginning of the season, for fruit weighing 500g or more, the selling price was 6,000 VND/kg (with the flower head cut off) and small fruit was 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg, her family had a profit of about more than 100 million VND/ha.
In addition, she also sells cuttings for VND1,000/cut, earning about VND80 million during this pineapple harvest. According to Ms. Len, her family's pineapple acreage was ordered by traders and companies before the harvest, so her family is very confident in production. In recent years, her family has not worried about "good harvest, low price" like before, because all the harvest is consumed. Pineapple trees have brought in high income every year, thus also creating motivation for her family to continue to stick with this crop.
Traders buy fresh pineapples for farmers. |
To meet orders from companies and businesses outside the province, right from the beginning of the pineapple season, the Agricultural Services and Agricultural Products Cooperative of Krong Bong district signed a contract to purchase products for 20 households, with an area of about 200 hectares of pineapple growing in and outside the province. The unit also purchased and connected with traders and local people to create a stable source of goods.
According to Mr. Lam Hung, Director of the Agricultural Services and Agricultural Products Cooperative of Krong Bong district, pineapple products on the hilly land of Yang Mao commune have created their own brand, with the advantages of being rich in honey, sweet, and thin-skinned, so they are very popular with customers. At the peak of pineapple harvest, the Cooperative sells an average of 100 tons of fruit per day to people, ensuring output and bringing high profits to both people and the Cooperative.
In recent years, pineapple has become one of the main crops, bringing stable income to many households in Yang Mao commune. From small-scale, fragmented planting on the hillsides, people have now expanded the scale, forming large specialized areas. Each pineapple season, on the hillsides of Yang Mao commune, there are traces of sweat and bright smiles of farmers when the results are duly rewarded.
