Farmers of Hon Dat district visit fields and take care of summer-autumn rice crop in 2025.
Up to now, the whole province of Kien Giang has planted 275,168.7 hectares of summer-autumn rice in 2025, reaching 99.66% of the plan, with a harvested area of 25,096 hectares. The autumn-winter rice crop has been sown on 2,691 hectares in Giong Rieng district and Rach Gia city. In some localities such as Tan Hiep, Giang Thanh, Rach Gia city, Giong Rieng..., farmers are preparing the land to sow the early autumn-winter crop on the land that has just been harvested from the summer-autumn rice crop in 2025.
Continuous rice cultivation without enough time to isolate between two crops can potentially lead to disease outbreaks due to accumulation from the previous crop and the possibility of organic poisoning of rice leading to poor growth and reduced productivity. On the other hand, on rice fields sown from the end of February to March 15, yellow leaf syndrome, suspected to be caused by a virus, has appeared in the districts of Giong Rieng, Tan Hiep, Giang Thanh, Chau Thanh and Go Quao.
Therefore, the risk of disease spreading from the summer-autumn crop to the autumn-winter crop in 2025 is very high, especially in conditions of continuous sowing and no quarantine period between crops. In addition, the weather in June 2025 is unfavorable for young rice plants, due to the influence of tropical depressions and storms causing prolonged heavy rains that may cause flooding.
To ensure successful production of the 2025 autumn-winter rice crop, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang province has requested the People's Committees of districts and cities to direct the People's Committees of communes, wards and towns to propagate to farmers to sow autumn-winter rice according to the sowing schedule of the Department of Agriculture and Environment. The first phase is expected to be from July 1 to 20; the second phase from August 1 to 10.
Localities need to coordinate with specialized sectors to strengthen propaganda and instruct farmers that after harvesting summer-autumn rice, they need to plow the land and turn over the rice stubble to kill rice hoppers, rice stubble and grass species that are secondary hosts of brown planthoppers (white planthoppers, black-tailed green planthoppers, etc.) to limit the spread of viral diseases. Isolate the previous and next crops for at least 20 days to limit the spread of pests and have enough time for the rice straw in the fields to decompose to limit organic poisoning, helping the rice plants to be healthy right from the seedling stage.
Strengthen propaganda and guide people to plant autumn-winter rice in 2025 in accordance with the province's general plan and crop calendar. Do not plant autumn-winter rice in areas without dykes and do not proactively respond to rain and storms.
