After days of rough seas due to the impact of storm No. 1, fishermen in the province are urgently going out to sea to catch fish with the expectation of a high yield of Nam fish. At fishing ports such as Cua Viet and Cua Viet market fishing wharf, every day, dozens of fishing boats dock at dawn to unload seafood, refuel, ice, fishing gear... to prepare for the next fishing trips.

Participating in offshore fishing, Mr. Nguyen Van Long in Phu Hoi village, Trieu Tan commune, Trieu Phong district, captain of fishing boat number QT 90063TS, who works in purse seine and squid fishing, said that since the beginning of the southern fishing season, his fishing boat has made more than 10 trips at sea and all have yielded quite good yields. Each long trip at sea, his fishing boat catches 4-5 tons of various types of seafood, earning an income of 130-150 million VND, after deducting expenses, each crew member receives 7-8 million VND/person/month.

According to Mr. Long, normally in previous seasons, in July and August, the catch was even higher, so he and other fishermen are expecting that from now until the end of the season, the southern fishermen will have more fruitful trips at sea, catching more valuable seafood such as tuna, squid, etc. "If more fish appear in the coming days, the catch and economic efficiency will definitely be higher," Mr. Long affirmed.

At Cua Viet market fishing port, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hung, captain of fishing boat number QT 94522TS, a purse seine fisherman, is refueling to prepare for the next trip. Mr. Hung said that for fishermen, the southern fishing season is the most important fishing season of the year due to favorable weather, calm seas, and abundant fish.

With his fishing boat, since the beginning of the year, his fishing boat has made 4-5 trips at sea each month, each trip lasting 2-5 days, mainly catching anchovies. In addition to the more favorable fishing grounds this year, he has also focused on applying technology in exploitation and upgrading fishing gear, so each trip has brought in an average income of about 100 million VND. "Not only does it bring economic efficiency to the family, but the 14 crew members working on the boat also have an income of 12-15 million VND/month depending on the catch," said Mr. Hung.

According to Mr. Tran Thanh Binh, an officer of the fisheries control office at Cua Viet fishing port, it is currently the peak fishing season in the south. Thanks to the catch of many types of seafood and stable prices, fishermen are very excited and have more motivation to go out to sea. Mr. Binh said that through monitoring on the current fishing vessel monitoring system, there are about 100 fishing vessels of fishermen in the province operating at sea.

To support fishermen, along with checking and controlling regulations against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU), the office has closely coordinated with fishing ports in arranging 24/7 staff to arrange and guide boats entering and leaving the port and arrange locations for means of transport to load and unload seafood conveniently.

Starting from April and lasting until September every year, the southern fish season is one of the main fishing seasons for fishermen. According to statistics from the Department of Fisheries, the whole province currently has over 2,400 fishing vessels of all kinds with a total capacity of over 124,000 CV, of which 774 are fishing vessels with a length of 6 m or more.

Since the beginning of the southern fishing season, the weather has been relatively favorable for fishing activities. Fishermen have actively gone offshore and stuck to the sea for production. Many fishing vessels have achieved high yields, especially those using purse seine, scoop nets, mixed gill nets, and herring gill nets. Fishing output in the first 6 months of the year reached nearly 14,300 tons, reaching 47.5% of the plan.

Head of the Fisheries Sub-Department Phan Huu Thang said that to achieve the set plan, the unit has coordinated with coastal localities to mobilize fishing boats for the southern fishing season; provided information on fishing grounds, aquatic resources and consumption markets so that fishermen can proactively plan production. Promoted propaganda and training on exploitation and development of aquatic resources; guided fishermen in applying science and technology in aquatic exploitation and post-harvest product preservation technology to improve product quality and value.

Popularize new fishing techniques for purse seine, drag net, and net fishing, use LED technology to save fuel, apply hydraulic winches, autopilots, and detectors to reduce costs and labor. Organize marine fishing activities into groups and teams to support each other in production on fishing grounds; promote marine fishing logistics services such as purchasing seafood, providing fuel and necessities right at sea and on islands to increase fishing efficiency and reduce production costs.

Mr. Thang added that, along with encouraging fishermen to go offshore to exploit the southern fish season, the agricultural and environmental sectors are also focusing on synchronously implementing legal regulations on fisheries management, especially implementing central directives and recommendations of the European Commission (EC) on combating IUU fishing.

Especially violations of fishing areas, use of toxic substances, explosives, electric shocks, and no fishing license. Closely monitor and supervise fishing vessels operating at sea through the journey monitoring system, promptly handle and prevent fishing vessels from violating in sea areas, especially foreign sea areas. Strengthen handling of violations of fishing vessels entering and leaving fishing ports and monitor the output of aquatic products exploited through ports, ensuring reliability in traceability, recording and storing complete records.
