Ly Son Special Economic Zone: A new milestone in the history of development of the outpost island
From July 1, Ly Son island district officially became Ly Son Special Zone - for the first time in history, the government and people here worked with a new name, opening a new chapter for the sacred island of the Fatherland.
On the island, the atmosphere of excitement is evident. All over the streets are colorful flags and flowers, people express their pride and expectations. Mr. Vo Minh Loi (Tay An Vinh village) shared: “Although I am still a bit confused with the new name, my heart is filled with pride. This is a great joy not only for me but also for all the people on the island. We have high expectations for the new policies that will create momentum for stronger development in the economy , culture, society, national defense and security. The restructuring of the government apparatus is the right step, in accordance with the people's wishes, bringing clear, practical benefits and closer to the lives of the islanders”.
Ms. Pham Thi Vinh (Dong An Vinh village) shared: “In recent years, the appearance and life in Ly Son have changed a lot. People not only grow onions and garlic but also do services and tourism . We all expect a clearer change since becoming a special economic zone.”
On the first working day of July 1, Mr. Nguyen Van Huy, former Standing Deputy Secretary of Ba To District Party Committee, who has just been transferred and received the new task of Chairman of the People's Committee of Ly Son Special Zone, affirmed that he will, together with the leaders of the special zone, promote the spirit of solidarity, innovation, put the interests of the people first, and turn Ly Son into a national-level sea and island tourism center.
On January 1, 1993, Ly Son island district (Quang Ngai) was officially established on the basis of separation from Binh Son district. By 2014, Ly Son island was officially connected to the national grid by underground cable.
From 2015 to now, Ly Son island has witnessed a strong transformation with a series of key projects being started and put into use. Large projects with high connectivity and spillover have contributed to promoting economic and social development, while maintaining security and defense. Notable ones include the Southeast mobile route, Ben Dinh port, Political - Administrative Center, Combined Military - Civilian Medical Center, Ly Son Boat Anchorage and Shelter, etc.
In the first 6 months of 2025, Ly Son welcomed nearly 82,000 tourists, an increase of 12.3% over the same period in 2024; of which, there were 1,171 international visitors, the total production value of economic sectors is estimated at 1,300 billion VND, an increase of nearly 7% over the same period last year, reaching nearly 50% of the yearly plan.
Solving "one-stop" procedures right at the commune
At the new commune of Van Tuong - a locality established from the merger of 7 communes in the key area of Dung Quat Economic Zone - the first working day also recorded many positive signals.
On the morning of July 1, at the Commune Administrative Center, many people came to resolve their documents in a happy and convenient atmosphere. Administrative procedures were processed right at the commune, significantly reducing time, costs and effort for the people.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Le (Phuoc Thien village) was moved: "Now, elderly people like me no longer have to travel far to get benefits. I hope the commune will continue to do it quickly and neatly so that people can benefit."
To ensure the settlement of administrative procedures for the people, Van Tuong commune has established two public administration centers at the commune People's Committee headquarters and at Binh Dong point.
Chairman of Van Tuong Commune People's Committee - Mr. Ung Dinh Hien - said : "Currently, the Public Administration Center has basically stabilized, in the spirit of responsibility, standards, aiming to quickly resolve procedures for people, businesses, and organizations to resolve procedures. The location is convenient, ensuring conditions for people to initially get used to the transition to the new government model".
Regarding development requirements, according to Mr. Hien, after the competent authority established Van Tuong commune, currently, the standing committee and executive committee are completing the system of documents, political reports, organizing congresses, in which, the orientation is to build Van Tuong commune to strongly develop in industry, urban areas, and services according to the plan.
Van Tuong Commune was established on the basis of merging 7 communes, located in the key area of Dung Quat Economic Zone. This is a locality with rich potential for comprehensive development in economy, industry, agriculture, fishery, services and tourism.
