An area in Ukraine's Sumy region was attacked by a UAV.

Reuters reported on September 17 that Russian forces attacked energy infrastructure in Ukraine's Sumy province, causing power outages in some areas and forcing authorities to use backup power sources.

Regional officials said the attack caused damage in the Konotop, Okhtyrka and Sumy districts of the region, forcing critical infrastructure to use backup power systems.

Water utilities in Sumy said the attack caused a power outage overnight, forcing them to switch to emergency power supplies.

Sumy acting mayor Artem Kobzar said there were no casualties in the city and that power workers were dealing with the aftermath of the attack.

Regional authorities said air defense systems shot down 16 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the area.

The Ukrainian Air Force said on September 17 that Russia had sent 51 UAVs to attack Ukraine overnight. Ukraine shot down 34 of them with air defense systems operating in five provinces.

On the Russian side, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov of Belgorod province near the border said on September 17 that Ukraine fired 173 shells into 6 areas in the past 24 hours, injuring 3 people.

Meanwhile, Russian forces are consolidating in neighboring Kursk province, reinforcing units there. On September 16, the Russian Defense Ministry said the country's military had regained control of the Uspenovka and Borki areas in Kursk.

In another development, Reuters reported on September 17 that the US company Meta, which owns social networks Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads, said it had banned RT, Rossiya Segodnya and state media networks.

Meta claims that the above media channels used deceptive tactics to carry out covert online influence operations.

The Russian Embassy in the United States did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The White House declined to comment.

US takes action to prosecute, sanction, and restrict Russia to prevent 'election interference'

Meta's move comes after the US indicted two RT employees on money laundering charges for hiring a US company to produce online content to influence the 2024 election.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said countries should treat RT's activities as Washington does because they conduct secret intelligence operations.

RT has ridiculed the US move and accused Washington of trying to prevent the broadcaster from operating as a journalistic organization.
