This afternoon (November 11),Education New Zealand (ENZ) officially announced the New Zealand Government Scholarship for University Level (New Zealand Universities Award - NZUA), a new educational initiative implemented by the government in collaboration with universities specifically for Vietnamese people. The NZUA 2025 program is expected to accept applications from May 2025 and will apply for the February 2026 intake.

According to ENZ, the official portal of the NZUA program and information on conditions and application methods will be announced soon. In the first year of implementation, NZUA will award 14 scholarships to Vietnamese candidates when enrolling at one of 8 public universities in New Zealand, each worth 15,000 NZD (226 million VND). The list of universities participating in the NZUA program can be followed HERE.

In addition to university level, New Zealand also offers government scholarships for high school students in grades 8, 9, and 10 (NZSS). This country also offers government scholarships for postgraduate level (Manaaki) for a number of countries, including Vietnam. Therefore, ENZ believes that New Zealand is currently a country that provides comprehensive support for Vietnamese students from high school to postgraduate level with government scholarship programs.

According to our research, the NZUA scholarship may be the first time an English-speaking country has launched a government scholarship program at the university level for Vietnamese people. Previously, there were postgraduate scholarship programs such as Fulbright (USA), Chevening (UK), Australia Awards Scholarships (Australia), Vanier (Canada), or for secondary school level such as the ASEAN scholarship (Singapore).

The NZUA program can be seen as the first step in a plan to further promote New Zealand's university education in Vietnam. In an earlier conversation with Thanh Nien , Mr. Ben Burrowes, ENZ's acting CEO of international, informed that this agency is for the first time building a comprehensive development strategy for the presence of New Zealand universities in Vietnam.

"Previously in 2018, we designed a similar strategy for secondary schools to promote NZSS and achieved many successes. So, in the strategy with universities, we are also looking at many new initiatives such as government scholarships at undergraduate level," Mr. Burrowes commented at the time.

The new manager added that ensuring all New Zealand universities are included in the NZUA programme demonstrates New Zealand’s commitment to expanding learning and development opportunities for Vietnamese people. “This initiative also demonstrates the New Zealand government’s strong interest in promoting educational cooperation with Vietnam, towards the 50th anniversary of cooperation between the two countries next year,” Mr. Burrowes shared.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2025 (UK), all public universities in New Zealand are in the top 2% of the world's best. These universities are also ranked first in the world for sustainable management according to the Times Higher Education (UK) University Impact Rankings 2024. In addition, 50% of them have achieved the "Triple Crown" certification of international accreditation: AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA.
