The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports hopes that artists who won gold and silver medals at the "Tran Huu Trang Cai Luong Stage Actor Talent" contest will continue to be creative to spread this art form to the general public.

New vitality, new expectations for reformed opera

Returning after a 6-year hiatus, the Tran Huu Trang Award was upgraded to a national competition, with hundreds of cai luong artists participating in all three regions, contributing to continuing to spread and affirm the strong vitality of cai luong in the country's cultural and artistic life. After being accepted by Ho Chi Minh City to organize again since 2020, the competition named "Tran Huu Trang Cai Luong Stage Actor Talent" was successfully held in 2 seasons 2020 and 2022, leaving a significant mark on expertise, organization and social impact.

In season 1, 19 outstanding faces were awarded gold and silver medals in 4 categories: fragrant male role - fragrant female role, unique male role - unique female role, old male role - old female role and comedy role. Of which, 7 gold medals belong to Vo Thanh Phe, Le Thanh Thao, Nha Thi, Thanh Toan, Kim Phung, Linh Trung and Meritorious Artist Thien Hoa.

And in season 2, the artists: Vo Minh Lam (playing the role of Co Sau, excerpt "Khau Vai Love Story"), Huynh Tieu Nhi (playing the role of Loan, excerpt "Ao Vong"), Tran Thi Thu Van (playing the role of Hue, excerpt "Duyen Kiep"), Cao Thuy Vy (playing the role of the old woman, excerpt "Tragic Tragedy"), Nguyen Minh Truong (playing the role of Tran Thang, excerpt "Ke si Thang Long"), Ha Nhu (playing the role of Doan Thi, excerpt "Hoi Xuan Duoc") won gold medals. This season, 11 silver medals belong to the artists: Hai Long, Vinh Son, Bich Hanh, Bich Cham, Phuong Nga, Diem Ngoc, Le Trung Thao, Nguyen Van Khoi, Thanh Dong, Nhu Huynh, Tran Minh Chau. They have enough potential to create more good roles, so that the gold medals and silver medals are not just titles, but become stepping stones for artists to firmly enter professional theater troupes.

"They need to be trusted by directors and remembered by the public. More importantly, the 2025 competition will contribute to shaping "reformed opera talent" in a context where the stage is facing many challenges: not only being good at singing and acting, but also aesthetic thinking, creativity, a having spirit of collaboration and stage presence" - Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong wishes.

To spread reform widely

This year, under the direction of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the preparation for the competition was organized systematically and professionally, enhancing the coordinating role of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, along with the responsible participation of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association. In addition to expertise, promotional and communication activities are also being promoted, helping young audiences become more interested in Cai Luong through digital platforms.

In particular, with a brisk orientation, this year's season promises to be the starting point for a journey to bring Cai Luong art into people's lives. Artists who won Gold and Silver medals in this season and the previous two seasons will be promoted, and their plays and excerpts will be included in a large-scale tour.

With this new promotion model, the Cai Luong stage has the opportunity to expand to the localities that have just merged into Ho Chi Minh City. Theaters, cultural centers, and public spaces in the expanded area will become the destination for performances by the talents from the Tran Huu Trang Award. This is how the city turns the award into not just an "honor ceremony", but a "mobile cultural institution" - where art and the public meet on vibrant stages.

Experts are excited that after two seasons of competition, the internal strength has been demonstrated, contributing to discovering, supporting and spreading young talents. "If we want to go further, turning the award into an important link in the process of developing the stage culture industry, connecting training - performance - serving the community, there must be an immediate roadmap. The approval of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council to invest in promotion, staging and touring is not only an investment decision for art but also an investment in identity, so that Cai Luong is not limited to memory, but is present in modern life" - Meritorious Artist Le Thien said.

According to experts, the competition is no longer a mere "launching pad", but is being upgraded by Ho Chi Minh City to become a strategy for developing in-depth theatrical human resources. The past two seasons are a solid start. With season 3, when talents are brought to the mobile stage of the expanding metropolis, Cai Luong has the opportunity to return to its rightful place: Art living in the hearts of the people, not only to preserve but to continue to develop.
