The French newspaper noted that the US has no objections to inviting Ukraine to join NATO, but this issue causes great disagreement among Ukraine's remaining Western allies.

At the same time, according to Le Monde, Mr. Biden will be able to facilitate Ukraine's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance if Ms. Harris wins. To promote this initiative, the US leader will be able to use his transition period - after the election in early November until his inauguration in January 2025.

Meanwhile, according to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, Paris is discussing with NATO allies the possibility of inviting Ukraine to join the bloc immediately.

" Regarding the invitation for Ukraine to join NATO, we do not rule out this possibility and are discussing this issue with our partners ," Barrot said.

A day earlier, in an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, Benjamin Haddad, the official in charge of European affairs at the French Foreign Ministry , said that Paris believes that sending an official invitation to Ukraine to join NATO should be a top priority.

He admitted that the process of Ukraine joining the alliance could take quite a while, but the invitation was the first political signal that could be given now.

Barrot said he supported Ukraine’s plan to end the war with Russia, and said he would work with Ukrainian officials to ensure other countries backed the proposal.

British expert Alexander Merkouris said that President Zelensky's speech about the country's need to possess nuclear weapons has angered Western allies.

One of the things that shows how angry the Western powers are is that at least in London there was a decision not to discuss Mr. Zelensky’s speech. The West is extremely angry and very shocked, they asked the media not to comment on this issue ,” Mr. Mercouris said in an interview with YouTube channel The Duran.

The military analyst noted that Zelensky's speech at the summit made absolutely clear Kiev's true desire - he wants Ukraine to be under the US "nuclear umbrella."

This move has certainly hardened the stance towards Mr. Zelensky and the Ukrainians. Moreover, the Pentagon in particular should be very careful about this move. And I think it is a huge mistake ,” Merkouris stressed.

Earlier, in a speech at the European Council in Brussels (Belgium), President Zelensky said that to win the conflict, Ukraine must have nuclear weapons or become a NATO member.

He suggested several ways to achieve this goal, including continuing to arm Ukraine, promoting the defense industry, strengthening air defense capabilities, removing restrictions on the use of long-range weapons, etc. Mr. Zelensky said that Ukraine would need nuclear weapons if it was not accepted by NATO.
