US accelerates support for electric vehicle production

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng17/03/2024

The US government is accelerating support for electric vehicle production to ease the industry's difficulties and reduce dependence on China.

The U.S. Department of Energy will provide Lithium Americas with a $2.26 billion loan to fund the country’s largest lithium mining project. Lithium Americas will then use much of the money to build a refinery at Nevada’s Thacker Pass mine, home to the nation’s largest reserves of the metal.

Lithium Americas is expected to initially produce 40,000 tons of lithium a year from its Thacker Pass mine, enough to power 800,000 electric vehicles a year. Production is expected to begin in 2027 and ramp up to 80,000 tons a year. It is just one of dozens of projects across the country racing to build a domestic supply of lithium and other minerals for electric batteries.
