Torrential rain causes 233 million year old monster to “rise” on the lake shore

(NLDO) - "Appearing" intact in the rain after 233 million years of extinction, a monster in Brazil could help solve a controversial issue for decades.

According to Live Science, Brazilian paleontologists announced that they have just found one of the oldest representatives of the most terrifying "age of monsters" on earth, when dinosaurs, mosasaurs, ichthyosaurs, pterosaurs... dominated the Triassic - Jurassic - Cretaceous periods.

It is a representative of the Triassic Herrerasaurids, believed to be one of the oldest groups of carnivorous dinosaurs, although this remains controversial.

The fossilized remains of the Herrerasauridae monster unexpectedly revealed itself during the torrential rains that hit the Brazilian city of São João do Polêsine in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in May.

According to the Brazilian news agency Agência Brasil, the skeleton of this dinosaur was almost completely preserved in a city reservoir.

Scientists have only done preliminary research and made the first arguments that it belongs to the Herrerasauridae lineage.

"This is one of the oldest fossils in the world and could play a role in 'helping us understand the origins of dinosaurs'," said paleontologist Rodrigo Temp Müller from the Federal University of Santa Maria (Brazil), who led the excavation team.

According to Dr. Müller, the above-mentioned group of ancient dinosaurs belonged to the first wave of predatory dinosaurs to occupy the evolved food chain on Earth.

The individual found on the shore of a lake in Brazil had a body length of about 2.5 m when alive, however its relatives may have been even larger.

In addition to the controversial evidence for Herrerasauridae around the world, there is also weaker and older fossil evidence believed to be of a group of dinosaurs called Nyasasaurus, which lived about 240 million years ago.
