According to USA Today, the National Park Service (NPS) has just announced the forecast of when cherry blossoms will bloom in the Tidal Basin area, Washington DC (USA). Accordingly, this year's cherry blossom season is expected to be at its most brilliant from March 28 to 31.

According to the NPS, full bloom is usually determined when 70% of the flowers on the Yoshino cherry trees have opened. There are currently about 3,800 cherry trees planted around the Tidal Basin and the National Mall (USA). However, this is only a prediction, as the blooming time depends largely on weather conditions.

"The cherry blossoms' blooming date can vary from year to year due to weather, but typically falls in the last week of March or the first week of April. In years with unusually warm weather, the flowers may bloom as early as March 15 (in 1990) or as late as April 18 (in 1958)," the NPS said.

The length of time cherry blossoms bloom also depends on weather conditions. If the weather is cool and there is little wind, the blooming season can last longer. Conversely, if there is heavy rain or strong winds, the delicate petals may fall after a short time. Late frosts, in particular, can prevent the tree from blooming.

"Yoshino cherry blossoms typically bloom for only a few days, creating a dazzling but fleeting scene – one of the most anticipated events in Washington DC" - NPS information.

The best places to see cherry blossoms

Cherry blossoms are present in many places in the US capital, but are most concentrated in Potomac Park, the Tidal Basin area near the Jefferson Memorial and the area around the National Mall.

Additionally, the Washington DC Tourism Department suggests some lesser-known spots that still have stunning views, such as the US National Arboretum, Anacostia Park, Dumbarton Oaks Garden on Georgetown Street, Stanton Park, and Oxon Run Park.

The cherry blossom trees were a gift of friendship from Japan to the United States, with more than 3,000 trees shipped from Yokohama, Japan, to Washington on March 26, 1912.

The Cherry Blossom Festival, co-organized by the NPS, will take place from March 20 to April 14. The event attracts a large number of residents and tourists, with many special activities such as parades, concerts and fireworks./.
