Right after finishing their first school year, Ngoc and Huyen together planned to open a free class for children in their hometown. Ngoc had long cherished this idea and shared it with her friends during a military lesson. With the approval of her family and the support of the Quang La Commune Youth Union, the two boldly turned the idea into reality.
Quang La Commune Cultural House became the place where the class met from June 30 to August 15, fixed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays every week. The class had 15 students, of which 7 were preparing to enter grade 1 and 8 were preparing to enter grade 2. The teaching content focused on Math, Vietnamese, writing practice, and practicing basic learning skills.
“My parents supported me a lot. My dad helped contact the village organizations, and my mom bought a board so we could start teaching,” Ngoc happily shared.
Although they are only first-year students, thanks to the experience of observing classes at the Pedagogical Practice Primary, Secondary and High School, along with researching and asking more teachers and acquaintances who are teachers, the two young people have applied gentle and creative teaching methods, suitable for each group of students. The experience of standing in class also helps them realize the gap between pedagogical theory in the classroom and teaching practice. Some students learn quickly, others are slower, requiring patience, flexibility and constant creativity. But it is these situations that forge the courage and love for the profession of these "future teachers".
The class quickly became a source of joy and excitement for the students. Some students overslept, woke up late and still insisted on their parents taking them to class. Some students did not remember the schedule, went to the cultural house every day, then went to the house to call “teacher”. There were even days when it was pouring rain, the teacher and student shared a thin raincoat, driving each other home on the wet country road. Those simple moments became memorable memories for future teachers and the children preparing to enter the learning environment.
This volunteer activity not only brings knowledge to children but also receives high appreciation from parents, authorities and schools. Ms. Ha Thi Mai, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Secretary of the Youth Union of Quang La commune, said: The free class for children organized by Ngoc and Huyen is a new, creative model in the local summer activities this year. This is a practical, meaningful activity, demonstrating the volunteer spirit and community responsibility of the two young students. We hope to coordinate to continue to maintain and expand the model during the summer, helping students consolidate knowledge, form positive learning habits in a close, friendly environment. At the same time, it is possible to expand the scale and content, not only teaching knowledge but also educating life skills, digital skills, and nurturing children's talents. Especially, in the difficult conditions of the commune, learning new subjects and skills during the summer is extremely beneficial.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai (Lecturer of the Faculty of Pedagogy, Ha Long University) said: “As a homeroom teacher, I have followed Ngoc and Huyen closely since their first days in the classroom. I am truly impressed that after only their first year of study, they have boldly built a meaningful community model like the “Zero-dong Classroom”. This project not only helps local children study during the summer, but also gives them the opportunity to practice their pedagogical skills, from the way they impart knowledge, handle situations to patience and love for the profession. I believe that, with their sense of responsibility and enthusiasm, Ngoc and Huyen will go further on the path they have chosen. The teachers in the faculty will certainly always accompany, support and spread this project to many other students”.
Not stopping at just one summer, Ngoc and Huyen hope that the model will spread more widely, have more young people participate and receive support to maintain and expand. The simple but meaningful "zero-cost class" has ignited the belief in the spreading power of kindness and is a valuable asset for the journey of "growing people" that the two female students of Ha Long University are gradually taking.
