Speaking at a press conference the same day, Mr. Steinmeier emphasized the issue of reason and responsibility at this time.

Chancellor Scholz plans to submit a plan to hold a confidence vote in parliament following the departure of one of the three partners in the governing coalition, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) of Finance Minister Christian Lindner. Only after the confidence vote will President Steinmeier have the right to call new elections.

Opposition parties now want an immediate vote of confidence after Finance Minister Christian Lindner was fired by Chancellor Scholz at a crisis meeting on the evening of November 6.

On the evening of November 6, Germany's three-party ruling coalition collapsed after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's decision to dismiss Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), claiming that Lindner had failed to fulfill his basic task of drawing up the budget and had lost the respect of his fellow cabinet members.
