On the morning of June 27, more than 1.1 million candidates nationwide continued to take the 2025 high school graduation exam, with elective subjects for the new program and 3 subjects in the combined exam with the old program. Talking to Thanh Nien before the exam, many candidates of the new program expressed their concerns about parts II and III of the exam - the part consisting of true-false questions and short answers that has just appeared this year.
The English subject still consists of 40 multiple choice questions (A, B, C, D), with not much difference in structure compared to before.
According to many candidates, although the two new multiple-choice sections help increase thinking ability and differentiate each candidate's ability better, they also make it difficult for them to calculate scores and "cannot ignore" all multiple-choice questions like before. Most of them are afraid of true-false questions because one wrong answer costs 0.5 points while three correct answers are counted as the same. Another reason is that the true-false section asks many practical questions, according to a male student taking the physics and chemistry exams.
Le Giang Khanh, a student at Marie Curie High School (HCMC), confirmed that his “biggest fear” was the short answers and he saw how difficult they were right from the moment he read the sample questions. This fear increased when he chose to apply to the University of Technology (HCMC National University) with either math or English. “I found the structure of the questions last year easier than this year,” the male student shared.
Because he was worried about the difficulty of the first high school graduation exam under the new program, Khanh chose to register for the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam and also get an IELTS certificate to increase his competitiveness.

Lam Gia Hung, a student at the same school, is also worried about whether the structure change will affect his ability to do physics tests. Meanwhile, Tru Gia Han, a student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), commented: "I like this type of innovation better because I can access many new types of exam questions, everyone has a fair chance and there is no more 'cramming'."
The most obvious demonstration of the difficulty of the new structure is the math test that candidates took yesterday afternoon (June 27). "The math test was a bit too much for me," said Nguyen Luong Bao An, a student at Le Thi Hong Gam High School (HCMC). An added that the questions in the test were "not like what I had studied before," especially the true-false and short-answer questions. "I couldn't figure out what the test was about, so I left it blank," the female student shared.
Meanwhile, NHMT, a student at Le Thi Hong Gam High School (HCMC), shared that the math exam had some tricky questions, along with confusing facts that made it difficult for him to find a solution. T. added that the short answer part made him the most “scared” because the exam was “both long and difficult”, so he hoped that the high school graduation exam for physics and chemistry would be “easier” so that he could compete for a place at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry.
Many candidates also shared that although they were initially somewhat “bewildered” by the change in the exam structure this year, after taking the test, they felt that this was a positive direction. The fact that the exam no longer follows familiar or “favorite” types of questions forces candidates to practice flexible thinking instead of mechanical memorization, thereby helping to reduce the pressure of memorizing a large amount of knowledge.
Many candidates also said that this change makes them more proactive in the learning process, forcing them to understand the essence deeply instead of rote learning.

After the optional exam (with the new program), candidates of the new program officially completed the 2025 high school graduation exam. Candidates of the old program, after taking the natural science or social science exam, continued to take the foreign language exam this afternoon, June 27.
The results of the 2025 high school graduation exam are expected to be announced by the Ministry of Education and Training on July 16 and considered for recognition of high school graduation no later than July 18.
