Mr. Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, gave the above warning at a press conference on August 1.

According to information posted on the official website of the United Nations, citing the latest report of the United Nations Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC), Mr. Djuarrric said that this is the first time in the history of the IPC survey that a warning of catastrophic hunger in Sudan has been issued.

Accordingly, 14 regions of the country are considered to be "at risk of famine" in the coming months. In fact, 1 in 2 Sudanese people struggle to find enough food each day. Notably, the country has recorded deaths due to hunger.

According to Mr. Dujarric, the World Food Programme (WFP) is scaling up its emergency response to save more lives in Sudan, by increasing the amount of food assistance and finding effective and innovative ways to immediately support millions of people in the country, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

The spokesperson stressed the urgency of dramatically increasing funding to scale up assistance to prevent famine.

The UN and its partners have also warned of the risk of more Sudanese falling into catastrophic famine if the current conflict, which broke out in April 2023, does not end.

Meanwhile, the conflict response committee in Wad Madani city, Gezira state in central Sudan, said that at least 17 people were killed in two attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in two villages in the state on August 1.

RSF has not yet commented on the two attacks.

According to data recently released by the United Nations, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF - Sudan's regular army) and the RSF has killed at least 16,650 people and displaced about 10.7 million people within the country, while about 2.2 million people have fled to neighboring countries.
