The US State Department and Treasury Department announced new sanctions on August 23, just ahead of Ukraine's independence day (August 24), to signal Washington's continued support for Kiev in its military conflict with Moscow.

The US government has sanctioned nearly 400 individuals and companies in Russia and around the world , including the son and wife of Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov. There are 46 companies and one Chinese citizen, as well as individuals in Belarus, Italy, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

The sanctions were expanded to include individuals and entities in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

"Companies, financial institutions and governments around the world need to ensure that they are not supporting Russia's military industrial supply chain," said US Undersecretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemov.

The US Treasury Department said there were about a dozen separate networks, comprising more than 100 individuals and entities in 16 jurisdictions, including China, Switzerland, Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates, that were allegedly linked to the Russian military industry.

The US and its allies have imposed more than 22,000 sanctions on Russia since 2014.

On the same day, August 23, US President Joe Biden spoke by phone with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and announced a new military aid package worth 125 million USD.

In a phone call with Mr Zelensky, President Biden reaffirmed Washington's "unwavering" support for Ukraine in its military conflict with Russia. The White House said the aid package includes air defense missiles, anti-drone equipment, anti-tank missiles and ammunition.

After the phone call, President Zelensky said: "Ukraine urgently needs arms supplies from the announced packages, especially additional air defense systems to reliably protect cities, communities and critical infrastructure."

On the same day, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had a similar phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov about the aid package.
