Bitter melon, gymnema sylvestre treat diabetes

Many studies have confirmed the effectiveness of traditional medicine products in treating chronic, non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc.

Traditional medicine for treating diabetes and hyperlipidemia

This afternoon, November 6, the leaders of the Department of Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy Management ( Ministry of Health ) provided information about the 2nd National Fair of Medicinal Herbs, Traditional Medicine and Medicinal Herb Products in 2024 (Vietramed expo 2024). This is an opportunity to promote and develop traditional medicine in Vietnam in supporting the treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes and metabolic disorders; updating technology in the production and preparation of traditional medicine.

The Director of the Department of Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy noted that diabetic patients need to have their health monitored throughout the treatment process with traditional medicine.

Regarding the application of traditional medicine, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Thinh, Director of the Department of Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy Management, Ministry of Health , said that although traditional medicine does not have the advantage of treating acute diseases, it contributes to the effective treatment of non-communicable diseases such as bone and joint diseases, cardiovascular diseases, hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes, etc.

"Traditional medicine does participate in cancer treatment. In medical literature, traditional medicine also has cancer treatment recipes that inhibit cancer cells," Mr. Thinh added.

As in some leading cancer hospitals, the Department of Traditional Medicine also participates in the treatment of cancer patients. Patients are treated with traditional medicine methods , scientifically correct, by doctors with knowledge of cancer and traditional medicine who are well-trained, improving the quality of life for patients.

Every year, units have scientific research topics evaluating the results of combined treatment and support with traditional medicine on various aspects of cancer. However, patients need to be treated at legitimate facilities, not to be lured into fake traditional medicine cancer treatment methods that have no scientific basis.

The quality of traditional medicine needs to be strictly evaluated.

Need to evaluate drug quality

According to the Director of the Department of Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy, some "diseases of the times, diseases of the rich" that even the poor now suffer from, such as type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disease, have been treated effectively with traditional medicine at traditional medicine facilities. These are diseases that have remedies from available herbs such as bitter melon, gymnema sylvestre... Among them, there have been many studies on the effects of gymnema sylvestre on diabetes. However, the use of medicinal herbs for treatment of diseases must follow the principle of combining ingredients, and patients need to be examined and have their health status assessed.

"For the above-mentioned endocrine-related and metabolic disorders, traditional medicine is one of its strengths, but depending on the disease, specific clinical research and assessment are needed, especially regarding safety," Mr. Thinh noted.

Currently, the Department of Traditional Medicine Management has submitted to the Ministry's leaders the establishment of 3 research centers to evaluate the effects of treatment drugs. One center is in Ho Chi Minh City; the other 2 centers are at hospitals under the Army and the Ministry of Public Security. In the future, many traditional medicine hospitals will have many centers to research and evaluate traditional medicine in a number of diseases.

Vietramed expo 2024 is organized by the Department of Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy Management in coordination with other units from November 21 to 23 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC), Ho Chi Minh City.

425 domestic and international booths participated in the fair from more than 300 organizations, traditional medicine hospitals, enterprises, production and trading units of medicinal herbs, traditional medicine, medicinal herb cultivation facilities, health care equipment, and smart medicine.
