The defeat to Grimsby Town was a big stain on coach Ruben Amorim. |
The Times predicts that coach Amorim could be sacked in September if Manchester United continue to play poorly. On the morning of August 28, Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw by Grimsby in regular time, then lost 11-12 in the penalty shootout.
Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher even fears that Amorim could be sacked this week if the Old Trafford club continues to lose in the Premier League round 3. After the first two rounds having to face Arsenal (lost 0-1) and visiting Fulham (drawn 1-1), Manchester United will face Burnley at Old Trafford in round 3.
Things are getting even more difficult for the "Red Devils" when the schedule for the next rounds of the Premier League forces the club to face "big guys" like Man City, Chelsea and Brentford in September.
"Amorim needs a strong start to the season. If not, Sir Jim Ratcliffe - co-owner of MU - will not hesitate to act. The possibility of Amorim being fired early is very high," Carragher emphasized.
With a spending spree of over £200m, Manchester United are betting big this season. The pressure will be on Amorim, as boss Ratcliffe is not known for being patient with his coaches. Amorim signed a contract with United until 2027, but the club's poor performance in the second half of last season has seen the Portuguese coach face criticism.
