This year's opening ceremony of teachers and students of Ta Khoa Secondary School was held at the yard of Ta Khoa Commune People's Committee. The ceremony was held solemnly and warmly, with the attention and encouragement of the leaders of the Department of Education and Training, the leaders of Bac Yen District Party Committee and all levels and sectors in the province, district and commune.
Ta Khoa Secondary School has been severely affected by four major floods since May. After each flood, mud from Nhan stream flows into the schoolyard, burying the entire first floor, the multi-purpose building, the public house, the boarding house and the school kitchen. Up to this point, the school is still submerged in mud.
Mr. Quang Van Quyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ta Khoa Commune, Bac Yen District, Son La said: "This year, due to early rain and heavy rainfall, a large amount of mud flooded into the school, about 1 meter thick. This year, the commune cannot mobilize resources to support the school. We will also care and help the school, but we have to wait until the end of the rainy season to clear the water and ensure that boarding students can return to their activities."
To overcome the consequences and proactively respond to the upcoming floods, this school year, all students are arranged to study on the 2nd and 3rd floors. There are enough classrooms, but physical education and other outdoor activities must be provided by the village's cultural house.
For nearly 100 students who are boarding, the school has mobilized their families to support transportation for students who can go back and forth during the day. For students whose homes are too far away, they are arranged to stay at a local house near the school; the cost of accommodation is covered by the school according to regulations. Some teachers who live far from home also have to rent accommodation outside.
Teacher Vu Van Tiem, Principal of Ta Khoa Secondary School, said: “Due to the long-term mud flooding and strong smell, the school cannot study on the first floor, nor can it accommodate boarding students. The school has consulted with the government and the Department of Education and Training to build a temporary iron bridge to connect the two buildings and from the school gate to the classrooms.”
Recently, the People's Council of Son La province has passed a resolution approving the investment in the construction of a new school for Ta Khoa Secondary School, the project implementation period is 2 years 2024-2025, construction will start at the end of this year. This is a resolution that meets the expectations of teachers, students and parents in the area. Hopefully, the new school will be completed soon so that teachers and students in this flood area can soon teach and study in a convenient and safe school, without having to worry every time the flood season comes.
