In Vietnam's group, coach Kim Sang Sik's team beat the Philippines 3-2 while Indonesia lost to Iraq 0-2. This result gives Vietnam a chance to overcome Indonesia to advance.

In Group C, Thailand held China to a 1-1 draw despite playing away from home. This result brought a slim hope to the defending ASEAN Cup champions in the race with China to advance to the next round. A similar situation also occurred in Group D when Malaysia held Kyrgyzstan to a 1-1 draw away from home to maintain a slim chance of advancing to the third qualifying round.

After the 5th round of matches, the Organizing Committee has determined that 3 more teams have qualified for the third qualifying round: Jordan, South Korea, Oman and Palestine.
