Japan Airlines has its first female Chairman of the Board of Directors

VnExpressVnExpress17/01/2024

Former flight attendant Mitsuko Tottori will become the first female chairwoman in the history of Japan Airlines.

According to Japan Airlines' announcement on January 17, Ms. Mitsuko Tottori will be appointed as Chairwoman of the airline's Board of Directors from April 1. Reuters assessed this as a deeply symbolic move as Japan is trying to narrow the gender gap in the workplace.

Tottori is currently a senior executive at Japan Airlines. She joined Japan Airlines as a flight attendant in 1985, the year the airline suffered one of the worst accidents in aviation history. Tottori then rose through the ranks to become a manager at Japan's second-largest airline.

The decision to appoint a female president comes as Japan faces growing pressure to increase gender diversity and address the worst pay gap among G7 nations.

"There are other female employees who are struggling with career advancement or major milestones in their lives. Hopefully, my selection as chairwoman will motivate or give them the courage to move forward," Tottori said at a press conference today.

Japan Airlines is changing leadership as it seeks to recover from the pandemic and welcome a surge in visitors to Japan. Aviation safety has been under the spotlight in the country following a recent collision between a Japan Airlines plane and a coast guard plane at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. Japan Airlines said the new chairman has a deep understanding and experience in operational safety and service.
