Two regional intelligence sources said the incident was linked to an Iranian weapons depot in the area. Nairab military airport, which is frequently used for weapons shipments and Iranian military movements, has been targeted by Israel in previous attacks.

Israel has stepped up attacks on Syrian airports and air bases aimed at disrupting Iran's use of air supply lines to transport weapons to its allies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Damascus denies allegations that Iran has a large presence in the country, saying it only sends military advisers to assist the Syrian government .

Iran's allies now hold power in large areas of eastern, southern and northwestern Syria as well as in some suburbs around the country's capital.
