In the history of the iPhone, no model has held the role of standard high-end phone longer than the iPhone 4. Launched in June 2010, this smartphone maintained its position as Apple's top phone until October 2011. This unusual extension came from Apple shifting the iPhone launch schedule from summer to fall, causing the iPhone 4 to last nearly 16 months before being replaced.

This period of time caused quite a bit of disappointment for those waiting for the iPhone 5. At that time, Apple only introduced the iPhone 4S with an appearance almost identical to the iPhone 4, but with many valuable improvements. In particular, the iPhone 4 also went through many different release milestones, from AT&T exclusive distribution, Verizon joining after half a year to the white version being delayed for nearly a year.

All of this has contributed to helping this phone model set a record that no high-end iPhone model has yet surpassed.

The most recent case is the iPhone 11 Pro, which maintained its position for 13 months due to the iPhone 12's delay during the pandemic. Some lines like the iPhone SE or iPhone SE 2 have a launch gap of more than 4 years, but because they are not in the high-end segment, they are not included in this list.

Now, the iPhone 17 is poised to surpass that historic milestone. According to the latest reports, the iPhone 18 won’t arrive until spring 2027. That means the iPhone 17 could remain the flagship model for around 18 months, surpassing the iPhone 4’s record of 15 months to become the standard iPhone with the longest lifespan.

The current landscape is very different from 15 years ago. The iPhone 17 will not be alone in the market, as Apple will continue to release Pro versions every year, while also preparing to introduce the Air line and the first foldable iPhone. The foldable device is expected to be the biggest hardware change in iPhone history. However, the iPhone 17 will still mark the longest-lasting milestone before the next generation appears.

Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 17 launch event will take place on September 9 (early morning of September 10, Vietnam time), and at the same time, it will announce the Apple Watch Series 11 and Watch Ultra 3. This event will officially open a new cycle, starting a period that could break the record of the past 15 years.
