At the end of June, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Son La organized a training course for agricultural and forestry officials from 9 Lao provinces on fruit tree grafting techniques to improve varieties and expand high-yield, high-quality trees suitable for the climate and soil of Lao provinces. At the same time, training was provided on artificial insemination techniques for buffaloes and cows, contributing to improving the size and quality of livestock, raising efficiency and preventing and controlling diseases.
Along with theoretical training, the delegation of officials from Lao provinces also had a field trip and visited typical crop and livestock models in Son La province. Mr. Yen Sac Sit Thi Nha Von, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of Bo Keo province, Lao PDR, said: Directly visiting the models, being introduced by agricultural officials and cooperatives of Son La province, sharing experiences in agricultural economic development, when returning to the locality, we will impart knowledge for farmers to apply.
Mr. Tran Dung Tien, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: Through the training course, Son La province hopes that cadres from neighboring Lao provinces will absorb and effectively apply new techniques in production practices, contributing to promoting agricultural and forestry development, exploiting existing potentials and strengths, improving people's lives and developing the local economy sustainably.
Every year, the Department of Agriculture and Environment also organizes working delegations to exchange; coordinates with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of other provinces to survey climate and soil, support the implementation of suitable fruit tree planting and livestock breeding models; sends staff to grasp information, promptly provide technical guidance, and help other provinces effectively implement production models.
From 2020 to present, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Son La has supported farmers in the provinces of Hua Phan, Luang Prabang, Luang Nam Tha with 17,900 fruit tree varieties; implemented 70 hectares of mango, longan, orange, and grapefruit planting models. Coordinated survey to select locations to implement fruit tree and forestry planting models in 5 provinces: U Dom Xay, Xieng Khouang, Luang Prabang, Luang Nam Tha, and Phong Sa Ly.
In addition, the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection supported the implementation of sugarcane quarantine for thousands of farmers in Hua Phan province to sell to the Son La province market, with more than 150 tons of sugarcane from Hua Phan province purchased by Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company in the last crop year.
Mr. Ho Trung Kien, Head of the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, said: Each imported sugarcane batch must comply with two mandatory requirements: plant quarantine and food safety. Normally, this process can last up to 3 days, while Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company requires raw sugarcane to be transported within 48 hours to ensure quality. The Department has coordinated to strictly implement quarantine work according to the correct and flexible procedures, shortening the time to 20-22 hours, creating conditions for sugarcane from Hua Phan province to arrive at Son La Sugarcane Factory as quickly as possible, ensuring quality.
Mr. Kham Phoi But Da Vong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of Hua Phan province, said: With the cooperation and support of Son La province in the past time, the agricultural sector of Hua Phan province has made steady progress, ensuring the set goals of food security, development of key agricultural products, forest protection and development, rural development and hunger eradication and poverty reduction. We hope to receive more cooperation from Son La province to promote local agriculture and rural development in the coming time.
Continuing to promote the agricultural cooperation program with Lao provinces, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment focuses on supporting and sharing experiences in implementing models; Transferring scientific and technical advances and plant varieties for other provinces to apply appropriately, contributing to fostering solidarity and attachment between Son La province and Lao provinces in particular and the special friendship between Vietnam and Laos in general.
