In 2024, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center and Bayer Vietnam Co., Ltd. signed a cooperation agreement to implement the model of "High-quality, large-scale model durian garden". The model was implemented with the participation of 10 households in communes in Lam Dong province.
“After testing for pesticide residues, almost all durian products at model gardens in Lam Dong meet export standards.”
Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong - Lam Dong Agricultural Extension Center
According to the agreement, the model is implemented on a scale of 200 hectares, including 10 hectares of model (1 hectare/household) and 10 hectares of control (1 hectare/household). The remaining area will be implemented by households themselves if they find it effective. In fact, the area applying the model has reached about 300 hectares.
Mr. Doan Van Thanh's family in Village 13, Quang Tin Commune has more than 14 hectares of durian for business. Mr. Thanh has put the entire area into the model of a large-scale, high-quality durian garden. Mr. Thanh said: "Previously, because I did not fully understand the techniques of garden care, I followed my intuition. That is, whenever I felt the need, I would spray the medicine. However, since receiving technical support from the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center and Bayer Vietnam Co., Ltd., the garden has grown noticeably greener and has a high fruit set."
According to Mr. Thanh, through the guidance of technical staff, he learned about some special drugs to treat pests and diseases as well as the "4 right" methods of use (right time, right place, right way and right dosage). Thanks to that, the fruit set rate is higher, and the condition of cracked stems and oozing sap is also limited.

Up to now, the durian garden is ready for harvest, the fruit samples meet high export standards, the trees are healthier than every year. Therefore, Mr. Thanh's durian garden is highly appreciated by experts and purchasing businesses and considered a model durian garden, high quality, large scale in the locality.
Similarly, Mr. Mai Huyech's family in Nam Gia Nghia ward (Lam Dong) has also participated in the model of growing high-quality durian for more than a year. According to Mr. Huyech, with an area of nearly 9 hectares of durian, he also applied the model to the entire garden. Participating in this model, Mr. Huyech realized that the most obvious advantage is that the investment cost is lower than the previous method.

In addition, the model of using drugs according to the growth and development cycle of durian trees as well as harmful pests. From there, it helps to prevent effectively, the right pests, the right diseases, using the right drugs, so the drug is highly effective.
“I was instructed to use low-toxicity drugs, ensuring a good quarantine period, so the product quality is improved and safe for users. This is also one of the measures that durian growers in the area are aiming for,” Mr. Mai Huyech shared.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong - Lam Dong Agricultural Extension Center, the goal of the model "High-quality, large-scale model durian garden" is to be widely deployed throughout the province. To have the best quality products, the Center and partners coordinate to implement synchronous solutions, including cultivation solutions and plant protection solutions. "Here, we intervene the most in plant protection solutions. The purpose is to manage pests at the right time and minimize the amount of pesticides. Thereby reducing pesticide residues in exported durian," Mr. Chuong added.

After nearly a year of implementation, the model garden yield reached 30 tons/ha, the rate of grade 1 products was over 85% with a bulk selling price of 65,000 VND/kg. After deducting all costs, the profit was over 1.3 billion VND/ha. Compared to the control durian garden, the yield reached 27 tons/ha, the rate of grade 1 products was about 78% with a selling price of 63,000 VND/kg and after deducting all costs, the profit was over 1 billion VND/ha.
“This result shows that effective pest management has helped the model garden have stable productivity, minimizing damage caused by pests. The productivity of the model garden is 10% higher than the control garden, while the profit is significantly higher,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong.
The model of “Large-scale high-quality model durian garden” was implemented at a time when the domestic durian industry in general and in Lam Dong in particular are facing many strict quality requirements from the consumer market. The use of safe, effective and technically correct pesticides has contributed to improving the productivity and quality of durian products, while demonstrating a responsible production method towards consumers and the living environment.
Durian is one of the main crops of Lam Dong province. Currently, the whole province has over 42,000 hectares of durian, the harvested area is about 20,000 hectares, and the output reaches over 200,000 tons/year.
