On September 9, 2024, due to the impact of storm No. 3 (Yagi), the old Phong Chau bridge collapsed, causing severe damage and cutting off the vital traffic route of Phu Tho province. In the face of the emergency, the Government assigned the 12th Army Corps (Truong Son Construction Corporation) to build a new bridge. The task is extremely urgent to promptly overcome the incident, resolve the congestion, serve the travel of people on both sides of the Red River, and at the same time restore local socio -economic development.
Colonel Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Commander of Army Corps 12, spoke at the ceremony. |
Right from the first days of construction, Corps 12 faced many difficulties such as: narrow space, demolishing the old bridge while building a new one; constructing pillars in the middle of a deep river with potentially dangerous fast-flowing water; erratic weather hindering foundation treatment and progress. Faced with these challenges, Corps 12 Command, together with the Thang Long Project Management Board, consulting units and local authorities closely followed and gave strong directions. Corps officers, soldiers and workers always upheld the spirit of "overcoming the sun, overcoming the rain, not losing to storms", working through Tet, holidays, and days off, with 100% of the troops staying at the construction site.
Through creative efforts, many technical solutions were applied to shorten the progress. In particular, the bored pile project was completed two months early; the time for casting the beam on the top of the pier was reduced from 35 days to 22 days - setting a record in the Vietnamese bridge and road industry.

At the ceremony, representatives of Phu Tho province, the Ministry of Construction and Army Corps 12 conducted the closing ceremony of the new Phong Chau bridge.
Leaders of Army Corps 12, Phu Tho province and Project Management Board presented gifts to construction units at the construction site. |
In the next phase, the project will enter the finishing stage including: Cantilever block engineering, asphalt concrete paving, lighting system installation, traffic safety, river embankment reinforcement. Despite the unfavorable weather forecast, Corps 12 is determined to take advantage of favorable conditions, work overtime, and increase shifts to ensure the progress, safety, and aesthetics of the project. The goal is to inaugurate in early October 2025, to welcome the 12th Army Party Congress and the Phu Tho Provincial Party Congress.
When put into use, the new Phong Chau Bridge will not only restore the vital traffic route of Phu Tho province, but also be a symbol of solidarity and unanimity among Party committees, authorities, people and Uncle Ho's soldiers in peacetime. The project contributes to healing losses caused by natural disasters, facilitating trade, creating momentum for socio-economic development associated with strengthening national defense and security in the region.
