As interest in electric vehicles wanes and consumers turn to traditional gasoline and hybrid vehicles, many automakers – including Honda – are adjusting their strategies. The Japanese automaker, which had previously hinted at slowing down its EV development, has now announced a stronger focus on hybrids.

Honda is striving to create the ultimate hybrid vehicle, delivering high efficiency and environmental friendliness to global consumers.

According to Autocar (UK), Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said that demand for hybrid cars is increasing, and therefore, the company aims to launch a series of hybrid cars using the " world's most efficient" gasoline-electric powertrain.

The new hybrid powertrain is expected to be smaller and lighter than the current generation, and will also have a 40% wider operating speed range. According to Honda, this improvement could help increase fuel efficiency by about 10%.

Despite the strong shift to hybrids, Honda is not giving up on electric vehicles.

Honda aims to launch 13 new models using next-generation hybrid technology globally by 2030. North America is considered the “main battlefield”, with plans to equip the new hybrid system on large models such as the Passport and Pilot.

While Mibe has not officially confirmed which models will be the first to get the new hybrid powertrain, he did reveal that the system will be paired with existing 1.5L and 2.0L gasoline engines. That means popular models in the US such as the Accord, Civic, CR-V and HR-V will likely be the first to get the new technology.

Despite its strong shift to hybrids, Honda is not giving up on electric vehicles. It continues to plan to produce its “0 Series” of battery-powered vehicles, which will include a sedan and an SUV. “We want to make battery-powered electric vehicles a pillar of our business from 2030 onwards,” said Mibe.

The Honda 0 SUV and 0 Saloon are expected to launch in 2026, but the company has not yet announced a specific time for the new hybrid line. Hopefully consumers will not have to wait too long.
