Mr. Huynh La (second from left) - Head of the Association for Supporting Poor Patients in Dinh Hoa commune, donated rice to support Mr. Danh Bo.
Returning to his hometown after a period of charity work in Rach Gia , Mr. Huynh La brought with him the wish to help the disadvantaged in his birthplace. Since 2003, he has used his salary and savings to buy rice for lonely elderly people. Every month, he prepares 300kg of rice, divides it into 30 portions and gives it to the poor. For more than 20 years, regardless of wind or rain or when his health is poor, this work has never been interrupted.
Mr. Danh Bo (69 years old), living alone in a small house in Hoa Thanh hamlet, Dinh Hoa commune, is one of the households that Mr. Huynh La has helped over the past 5 years. Although he has 4 children working far away, Mr. Danh Bo's life is still poor, depending on the half-acre field behind the house and his hired work. "I am very happy to receive rice from Uncle Sau (Mr. Huynh La's nickname) every month. Thanks to that, my family has enough to eat and the strength to go to work," Mr. Danh Bo confided.
Mr. Danh Bo (71 years old) is also one of the people that Mr. Huynh La has supported over the years. His wife has heart disease and his daughter stays at home to take care of her parents, and their income depends on 1.5 hectares of rice fields. “For more than ten years, Uncle Sau has been giving my family rice regularly, sometimes he also gives cooking oil and soy sauce. On holidays and Tet, the local authorities give gifts. Thanks to that, my family has overcome difficulties,” Mr. Danh Bo shared.
With his prestige, dedication and kind ways, Mr. Huynh La mobilized overseas Vietnamese, businesses, acquaintances in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho... to join the Commune's Association for Supporting Poor Patients to carry out larger-scale social security activities. From 2016 to now, he and the Commune's Association for Supporting Poor Patients have mobilized more than 5 billion VND. In the first 6 months of 2025, he mobilized more than 2 billion VND, from which he built 5 rural bridges, 5 charity houses and gave more than 1,400 gifts to households in difficult circumstances.
In addition to supporting the poor, Mr. Huynh La also cares for students in especially difficult circumstances. Before each new school year, he prepares notebooks, school supplies, and bicycles to give to students in difficult circumstances. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he actively mobilized necessities, medicine, and gifts to support blockade areas, checkpoint forces, and severely affected households.
Mr. Le Van Mot - Party Cell Secretary, Head of Hoa Thanh Hamlet said: “Hoa Thanh Hamlet has 482 households, of which more than 77% are Khmer. Before 2016, the hamlet had 17 poor households and 31 near-poor households. Thanks to the joint support of individuals like Mr. Huynh La, the social security situation has improved significantly. Up to now, the hamlet still has 3 poor households and 2 near-poor households. People are not only supported materially but also encouraged spiritually to proactively rise out of poverty.”
Mr. Huynh La's "Skillful Mass Mobilization" model started from the kindness of an ordinary person, persistently doing charity work for more than 20 years. With his persistent and effective contributions, he has been recognized with many forms of rewards from the commune to the province. Most recently, he was awarded a certificate of merit in 2024 by the Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Giang province for his outstanding and outstanding achievements in mobilizing contributions to implement social security work in the province.
