Many high schools in China are implementing a novel learning method in which teachers encourage students to move freely and read aloud the knowledge they need to review during morning self-study.
This measure is said to help children feel more alert and refreshed at the start of the school day, while also helping to improve their spirits and reduce learning pressure.

According to Chinese media, the "lively self-study hour" method is being applied in many schools across the country of a billion people.
In videos circulating on social media, students during “lively self-study hours” can freely move around as they like inside the classroom, and they can read aloud the knowledge they need to review.
Typically, self-study hours last about 30 minutes before the first class begins. The first reports of “lively self-study hours” appeared on Chinese social media in 2021, originating from a middle school in Shaanxi Province, China.
At that time, 12th grade students of a high school in Shaanxi province initiated exciting activities during self-study hours to relieve stress before the college entrance exam.
“Lively self-study hours” are creating unprecedented scenes of excitement in classrooms, changing the familiar image of quiet and orderly classrooms.

The real effectiveness of “lively self-study hours” remains controversial (Photo: SCMP).
However, the online community's reaction is quite mixed. There are people who support this method, saying that combining exercise and memorization helps students feel happy, comfortable, and learn lessons faster.
However, many people are skeptical that children being too active, moving around and reading aloud the knowledge they need to remember, will make the classroom chaotic, affecting their ability to review lessons effectively. In fact, some students have said that they have become... hoarse after "lively self-study hours".
