International scholars share experiences in cooperation and border management on land and at sea

On October 8, 2024, the International Conference "Cooperation for Peaceful and Developed Borders, Seas and Islands" took place successfully in Hanoi .

The workshop was co-chaired by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Wallonie-Bruxelles Delegation (Belgium), with the participation of over 170 delegates, including domestic and foreign scholars and researchers, former leaders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; representatives of departments, ministries, sectors, border and coastal localities, and foreign representative agencies in Vietnam.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the National Border Committee Nguyen Minh Vu said that the theme of the workshop reflects the objective and urgent need for international cooperation on peaceful and developed borders, seas and islands.

Permanent Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu emphasized the role of international law, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) in maintaining a peaceful and stable environment, creating a solid foundation for international cooperation activities on seas and islands.

Mr. Pierre Du Ville – Head of the Wallonie-Bruxelles Delegation in Vietnam expressed his pleasure to continue to coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize the Workshop. He expressed that the workshop will contribute to strengthening the good cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Belgium. Referring to the theme of the workshop, he welcomed Vietnam's efforts and results in cooperation with neighboring countries on territorial borders.

At the workshop, experts and delegates spent a lot of time discussing experiences in cooperation and management of land and sea borders, including the experiences of Belgium and Canada in resolving and managing land border issues, the experience of cooperation between Ban Gioc Waterfall (Vietnam) and Detian (China); the legal framework for determining overlapping sea areas and rights and obligations in these areas; measures to ensure sustainable management of marine resources and promote transparency in marine management.

The workshop was attended by over 170 Vietnamese and international delegates, experts and scholars. Discussions at the workshop demonstrated the importance of border and maritime cooperation based on international law, contributing to peace, security and development among the countries involved.
