Appearing at the Miss USA International 2025 event, Thanh Thuy stunned fans with her strange appearance. Instead of her familiar light, clear makeup style, she appeared with straight hair, a face made up in dark brown tones, dark smoky eyes, thin eyebrows and dark lips. The change was met with backlash from many Vietnamese audiences. Comments such as "Without reading the content, I wouldn't have known this was Thanh Thuy", "She looks older than her age with this makeup", "like a nail technician" or "like in a 90s Hong Kong movie" were not simply responses to the makeup, but also concerns that Thanh Thuy would lose the characteristics of Vietnamese beauty and that "my Asian features don't match this American makeup style".

However, many people want Thanh Thuy, who is representing Vietnamese beauty, to adapt to international standards. Supportive comments such as "when in a different country, you have to adapt to local customs" show a more moderate view.

One commenter wrote: "The team has already booked a makeup artist but haggles or uses their own people, which is disrespectful to the organizers." When participating in international events, beauty queens often have to work with a team of local experts and do not have much autonomy over their personal image.

Thanh Thuy's makeup artist for this trip was Lisa Opie - a KOL with over 1.1 million followers, who regularly collaborates with Miss USA and Miss Universe. This shows that this was not a makeup "accident" but the expert seemed to have prepared in advance.

Instead of refuting or explaining the incident, Thanh Thuy chose to share positively: "I cherish every trip to new lands as Miss International. I am grateful for always being warmly welcomed and cared for in each place and am not afraid to experience new cultures, new styles, including different makeup layouts.

Every team I've worked with has taught me valuable lessons and I'm truly grateful for that. Growth begins when you step out of your comfort zone."
