Plei Krong Lake - "green flower" in the middle of the jungle

Nestled among the rolling mountains, Plei Krong Lake (Kroong Commune, Kon Tum City, Kon Tum Province) is as quietly beautiful as a rustic, profound, yet captivating Ba Na folk song in the middle of the great forest.

Plei Krong Lake was formed after Plei Krong Hydropower Plant officially came into operation in 2009, at the confluence of Dak Bla and Krong Po Ko rivers (second-level tributaries of Se San River).

With a water surface area of over 6,500 hectares and an average depth of 15-20 m, Plei Krong Lake not only regulates water and generates electricity but also creates a charming landscape in the middle of the mountains and forests. People in Kroong commune often call it "Kroong Sea".

Small clusters of islands emerging in the middle of the lake form beautiful natural "oases".

Standing from the high hillside looking down, the lake appears like a giant “mirror” reflecting the entire deep blue sky of the Central Highlands. Small clusters of islands emerging in the middle of the lake form beautiful natural “oases”, where wild birds come to nest and the forest trees still stand proudly. In the dry season, the lake surface is as calm as a sheet of paper, the emerald green water reflecting the rows of ancient trees along the shore, making this place no different from a vivid ink painting.

Not only is the landscape beautiful, Plei Krong Lake also brings significant economic benefits to local people. “Since the lake was built, the landscape has changed dramatically, the air is fresh, and the trees are green all year round. Many people in the area have switched to fishing, then developed small-scale tourism services,” said Mr. A Mlun, Secretary of the Kroong Klah Village Party Cell (Kroong Commune).

The lake water is emerald green, so people often call it "Kroong Sea".

Thanks to the wide and clean water surface, many households have taken advantage of this to exploit and catch aquatic products with the main types of fish such as: catfish, goby, snakehead fish, grass carp, carp, tilapia... People also open services for tourists such as: SUP rowing, fishing, overnight camping... along the lake. Visitors can rent a boat to explore the clusters of "small islands" emerging in the middle of the lake like green "desert islands". Each place can become a stop for camping, relaxation or recreational fishing...

Ms. Tran Thi Bich Hien, Party Secretary, Chairwoman of Kroong Commune People's Council said: "The locality has had a planning orientation to develop the lake's economy associated with eco-tourism in the future, especially developing services such as: SUP rowing, lake cruise, fishing experience, overnight camping... The commune has also renovated the traditional communal houses of two Ba Na villages in the area according to the Ba Na cultural identity to develop community tourism, introduce gong culture, musical instruments, cuisine and traditional festivals of local ethnic minorities in the area".
