"Hay nung khau" is usually made from solid wood ("may so" or "may tin pet" wood is a flexible type of wood that does not crack or warp). A hay khau is usually cylindrical , about 35cm high, with a mouth and bottom diameter of about 16-19cm, and a smaller waist.

The sticky rice steamer is not only a household item but also has a deep cultural meaning. For Thai people, "without a pot or a steamer, it is not enough". When a son gets married, parents often buy him a steamer set as a dowry, with the hope that the family fire will always be red hot, warm and full. Although society has changed and many modern household appliances have appeared, Thai people still preserve and maintain the use of the steamer, even creating new innovations in materials and designs to better suit modern life.
