Striker Viktor Gyokeres refused to attend pre-season with Sporting Lisbon to push through a move to Arsenal.

According to The Athletic , the Swedish star has informed President Frederico Varandas that he will not play any more matches for Sporting. The 27-year-old striker has refused to return to the team to prepare for the new season. His decision has been communicated to the coaching staff and teammates.

Gyokeres feels betrayed, believing that Varandas unilaterally reneged on a previous agreement that would have allowed him to leave for €60m plus €10m in add-ons. Arsenal were prepared to pay more than that, but a final agreement with the Portuguese club has yet to be reached.

Joining Sporting in 2023, Gyokeres quickly became Europe's top scorer with 97 goals in 102 games, helping the club win the Primeira Liga title. Arsenal see the Swede as the perfect piece to boost their attack in the race for the Premier League title next season.

If all goes well, Gyokeres will be the next notable signing for Arsenal following the completion of contracts for Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and the upcoming Noni Madueke. Coach Mikel Arteta is gradually perfecting the squad to conquer major titles in the 2025/26 season.
