Among the 100 typical examples nationwide that were recently honored by the Vietnam Red Cross Society in early June 2025, Mr. Le Xuan Hoa - Director of Saigon Chanh Quan Joint Stock Company in Ho Chi Minh City - is one of the typical examples honored with 78 voluntary blood donations.

Mr. Hoa said that every time he donates blood, he feels very happy because he has done something meaningful. According to him, patients can buy medicine, but when they need drops of blood to save lives, they can only get it from sharing between people.

"Blood cannot be produced, so donating blood is even more necessary. After donating blood, I still feel healthy and normal, so I really hope that my small act can spread to many people so that everyone is willing to share. At that time, the blood bank will always have an abundant supply, and promptly treat patients when needed," Mr. Hoa confided.

Give without expecting anything in return

Mr. Hoa clearly remembers the first time he donated blood was when he was a second-year student in 1994. At that time, he was on the road when he saw a traffic accident. Without hesitation, he and a passerby immediately took the victim to the hospital for emergency treatment.

He had used all the money he had just received from his tutoring job to pay the hospital bill for the victim. However, due to a misunderstanding, he was almost beaten by the victim's family, who thought he was the one who caused the accident. Luckily, the person who took the victim to the hospital explained, and he was "let go".

The doctor said the victim needed blood for surgery and the hospital was looking for blood donors. When he learned that he had the same blood type as the victim, without hesitation, Mr. Hoa immediately donated blood.

"The first time I donated blood to save someone, I didn't think or fear anything other than just thinking about helping someone," Mr. Hoa laughed.

After learning more, he learned that donating blood does not affect his health. So every year he regularly goes to the Humanitarian Blood Donation Center (Ho Chi Minh City Red Cross Society) to donate about 3-4 times.

When the Ho Chi Minh City Red Cross Society established a reserve blood donation team, Le Xuan Hoa was one of the first names on the team's list.

He remembers the early days when the team was first established. Every time he received information that the hospital needed blood to save people, he and the members immediately rushed to the hospital.

In cases where patients are in difficult circumstances, we also contribute our own money to help cover hospital fees and encourage them to get well soon.

I stay healthy enough to be eligible to donate blood, thinking that when I donate my blood, I am contributing a little bit to saving the lives of patients without expecting anything in return.

Spread the good lifestyle

From his own story, Mr. Hoa has encouraged his relatives and friends to donate blood. His wife has also donated blood with him many times.

"Once when my two children asked me when they would be old enough to donate blood like me, I felt very happy and moved. I just hope that when they grow up, they will know how to live a kind, loving life, and be willing to share their blood to save others, that will be happiness," Mr. Hoa confided.

Donating blood regularly and always being there when needed has become his wish and the motto in life that he has chosen. Even when the COVID-19 outbreak in Ho Chi Minh City led to a blood shortage in some places, he and his wife still decided to donate blood together in this difficult time.

Just like that, he silently did the work that had become a habit and a passion. Even the gifts he received according to the standards for blood donors, he immediately gave them to any disadvantaged people he met on the street because "after donating blood, I felt relaxed and light-hearted".

He officially registered to donate his body to medicine in 2011. He chose Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy with the thought that "I can still do meaningful work" with medical research to help people even when I am no longer alive. To be able to do this, he had to convince his family and relatives a lot to get them to agree and support his decision.

Not stopping there, both he and his wife also registered to donate organs. When he told his family about his intention, they all said why he was thinking about such bad things at such a young age.

"The school introduced me to the fact that the body of the donor after death will be used for research and study of medical students, so I was even more urged to fulfill my wish," Mr. Hoa shared.

79th Blood Donation

Returning from his trip to Hanoi, Mr. Hoa said he was ready to donate blood for the 79th time on June 16. He said he was very impressed with the image of people in some countries lining up to donate blood after disasters occurred in their countries. At the same time, he hoped that Vietnamese people would have a more open mind about donating blood, considering it as something that should be done.

"I try to donate 100 times before I reach the age of 60, because then I will no longer be able to donate blood. After donating blood, I am still healthy, I want to remind this and hope the community will join hands to share these drops of blood of love," the 51-year-old man expressed.
