Xuan Son village, Son Dien commune, Quan Son district, Thanh Hoa province is a poor land, where people live on slash-and-burn farming all year round. Life here is still difficult, Luong Thi Luc (born in 1990) - a Muong girl at that time tried hard and passed the entrance exam to study physical education and sports in Hanoi.
In 2015, after graduating, Luc married Pham Ngoc Thanh (born in 1989), from Yen Bai province. Luc and his wife studied the same physical education major, but when they got married, neither of them followed the profession but returned to their hometown to develop the economy.
Initially, Luc and his wife opened a toothpick and chopstick factory, but the economic efficiency was unstable. For many years, the products had no output, causing a deficit in working capital.

In 2020, while visiting the village's Sua stream to play and bathe, the couple noticed that the stream water here flows all year round, is very cool and clean. Therefore, Mr. Thanh came up with the idea of turning to a new economic direction: raising sturgeon.
“At that time, my husband said that in his hometown of Yen Bai, his relatives had also raised sturgeon with high economic efficiency and wanted to try it. When I heard my husband say that, I immediately agreed. One afternoon at the stream, my husband and I made a plan to try raising sturgeon,” Ms. Luc recounted.
No sooner said than done, the next day, they went to survey, invested in electricity, a self-flowing water system, dug a pond, lined it with tarpaulin, built a cement tank... to start raising fish.
Initially, Luc and her husband experimented with raising fish in 4 tanks with more than 1,000 fry. After only 12 months of raising, her fish tanks yielded more than 2 tons, with an average selling price of 180,000-220,000 VND/kg, and after deducting expenses, the profit was nearly 100 million VND.
Realizing that the sturgeon farming model brought high economic efficiency, Luc and his wife decided to expand the farming model to 20,000 fry. In 2024, the family's revenue from sturgeon farming reached nearly 2 billion VND, after deducting expenses, the profit was more than 600 million VND.

Not only bringing high income to the family, Ms. Luc and her husband also create regular jobs for 5 local workers with salaries ranging from 6-8 million VND/person/month.
“Sturgeon has high economic value, so we often call it a “noble” fish. This type of fish lives in clean water, the water temperature is maintained at 18-23℃, which is favorable for sturgeon growth and development. If the water source, temperature, and food are not maintained properly, the fish will die,” Ms. Luc shared.
According to Ms. Luc, sturgeon products are currently widely consumed in restaurants. Her family's finished fish batches are mainly imported for tourist areas in Hai Phong, Hanoi, and Quang Ninh. When it's time to harvest, traders from the provinces will come directly to get the goods.
To further develop their sturgeon products, Ms. Luc and her husband established Thanh Luc Agricultural and Aquatic Service Cooperative. Currently, her family's sturgeon products have met the 3-star OCOP standard.
Her family is currently expanding and building another farm at the headwaters of Sua stream and has released tens of thousands of new breeds. It is expected that this year, her family's sturgeon farm will earn a profit of billions of dong.

In 2024, Ms. Luc was awarded a certificate of merit by the Thanh Hoa Provincial Farmers' Association as a typical creative and entrepreneurial farmer in ethnic minority areas in 2024.
Recently, on May 16, she was again certified by the Thanh Hoa Provincial Women's Union as an Outstanding Economic Woman for the period 2020 - 2025.
Mr. Luong Van Chien, Vice Chairman of Son Dien Commune People's Committee, said that this is the first sturgeon farming model in Quan Son district. Currently, Ms. Luc's family's model is developing very well and can be developed in the commune at 3 to 4 other locations.
"Ms. Luc's family is looking forward to developing more in many other places in the commune. We will create conditions for the family to expand the model to develop the local economy," said Mr. Chien.
