With her technical backhands, powerful smashes and good control of space and the game, it was quite surprising when Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen - Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department (VSD) revealed that she had only started playing pickleball since the end of last year.
According to Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen, having played tennis, badminton, table tennis and won many awards in those sports helped her adapt quickly when switching to pickleball. "This sport has its own interesting points, but also has many similarities with other racket sports," she told Tien Phong newspaper reporter.
Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department shared: "One of the factors that makes pickleball attract many athletes to participate is because it is easy to play. New players only need to practice about 5-7 sessions to grasp the rules and play basic ball, and a few more months to master hitting the ball back and forth, and the feeling of the ball is also better.
In addition, pickleball has become popular because of its accessibility, anyone can play and especially, it can be played anywhere, just bring a racket, unlike other sports that require a field, equipment that requires investment. Pickleball rackets are also quite light, and if we warm up carefully, we will avoid injuries."

After playing pickleball for a while, Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen also realized many wrong stereotypes about this sport. "Many people think that pickleball is a 'trendy' sport and belongs to the 'short-lived' trend. Actually, it is not," she said, "Every time I step onto the pickleball court, I can clearly feel everyone's passion.
Partly because it brings many benefits, such as weight loss. I myself have lost 2-3kg since playing this sport. Partly because there are more and more people playing, the interaction and connection also increase."
In the premises of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department, a pickleball court was set up so that every day, after stressful working hours, Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen and the officers and employees of the Department can participate in sports activities, both to improve their health and to enhance their spirit of solidarity.

"I believe pickleball will develop sustainably, because the more you play, the more attractive it becomes," said Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen. "It's true that pickleball is easy to play, but to play well is not easy, it requires very high techniques. For example, dinks (drops in the Non-Volley Zone), drops (hitting the ball down) or drives (returning the serve) require skills, or situational judgment, flexible movement and building strategies to compete at a high level."
That is why, according to Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen, pickleball is a sport with a lot of potential: "In addition to improving health and building community, pickleball also contributes to promoting economic development, from equipment, competition costumes to event organization and sports tourism.
In the long term, pickleball can also become a high-performance sport because of the strong increase in the number of players and spectators. This is what the Olympic sport is aiming for. As we have seen, many tennis stars or other sports have switched to pickleball and achieved success. We also have many good pickleball players now, even with the ability to compete internationally."

Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen said that there is currently a pickleball sport managed by the Vietnam Sports Administration nationwide, but the establishment of the Federation "needs to be implemented through many certain steps". A very good news for the pickleball community: this will be an official competition at the 2026 National Sports Festival taking place in Ho Chi Minh City.
Before that, in July, also in Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnam Pickleball Tournament - Hyundai Thanh Cong Cup 2025 will take place. At the D-JOY Pickleball Court (61 Nguyen Luong Bang, Tan Phu Ward, District 7) from July 4 to 6, thousands of professional and amateur athletes from all over the country will compete, creating exciting pickleball matches as well as moments of emotional explosion.
"The Vietnam Pickleball Tournament gathers excellent players nationwide, and is organized systematically and professionally with a prize fund of up to 1 billion VND. In my opinion, this is one of the leading tournaments in Vietnam to develop the movement and high achievements, while also providing opportunities for athletes to test their skills and exchange in a quality, prestigious tournament," emphasized the Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department.

Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen also added that to become a National Championship, a tournament "needs to attract top athletes, have a large prize fund and be professionally organized, ensuring the highest professional quality, and at the same time must be a prestigious playground that can elevate athletes".
"Having initiated and co-organized many large-scale, national-level sports tournaments, from the National Marathon and Long-distance Championship of Tien Phong Newspaper (Tien Phong Marathon), the National Football Super Cup to the National Golf Championship, Tien Phong Newspaper has created a brand with large-scale events.
I believe that the Vietnam Pickleball Tournament - Hyundai Thanh Cong Cup will also develop to a similar level," said Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen.
