On the afternoon of August 22, the physical gold market in major trading centers in Asia remained quite gloomy. The main reason was the strong fluctuations in world gold prices, making buyers hesitant and waiting. However, in India, goldsmiths have started buying gold again to prepare for the upcoming festival season.
Gold prices in India eased to around 99,300 rupees ($1,135.77) per 10 grams on Friday afternoon, after hitting a record high of 102,250 rupees earlier this month. The drop in prices has boosted confidence among jewelers, who have started stocking up ahead of major festivals like Dussehra and Diwali in October, when Indians traditionally buy gold for good luck.
Indian gold dealers are now offering gold at discounts of $2 to $3 per ounce below official domestic prices, including import duties and sales tax. That is a significant improvement from discounts of up to $6 last week. However, consumer purchasing power remains weak, at around 60% of normal levels.
In China, the world's largest gold consumer, gold is sold at a premium of $3 to $8 per ounce over global spot prices. World gold prices this week ranged from $3,311 to $3,358. Some experts say the market is in a thin trading phase, so any information from the upcoming Jackson Hole conference could cause unexpected fluctuations in gold prices.
Meanwhile, the gold markets in Hong Kong and Singapore were also relatively quiet. In Hong Kong, gold was sold at par or a premium of $1.70. In Singapore, premiums ranged from $0 to $2.50. While there was some consumer activity, overall demand remained modest. Similarly, in Japan, gold was traded at par or a premium of $0.50 to the spot price.
