Raising civets helps Mr. Tran Quoc Phuong's family in Hoat Giang commune earn billions of dong each year.
Realizing that raising civets brings quite high economic efficiency and does not cost much in food, in early 2020, Mr. Tran Quoc Phuong in Trung Chinh village, Hoat Giang commune decided to give up his carpentry job and switch to raising civets. When he was licensed by Ha Trung Forest Protection Department, he invested in building a barn and at the same time packed his bags and went to Vinh Long province to buy 11 civets for breeding, including 8 females and 3 males.
According to Mr. Phuong, civets are clean animals and do not like damp, smelly places, so in addition to cleaning the cages every day, he also has to change the drinking water. At the same time, the cages must be disinfected 1-2 times a week to avoid causing disease. Although they are domesticated civets, they still retain their wild nature, so they are very aggressive. If kept in the same cage, the civets will bite each other, so small cages must be designed to raise each civet in a separate cage. Civets' food is usually bananas, jackfruit, papaya, miscellaneous fish... These are easy-to-find foods and very low cost, each civet costs about 3,000 VND/day but have very high economic value. A mother civet gives birth to 2 litters/year, each litter has 3-5 babies, helping the family's civet herd of 50 parents to sell 100-130 civet breeds and 1-1.4 quintals of civet meat to the market each year. With the current selling price of 12 - 14 million VND/pair of breeding mink and 1.65 million VND/kg of mink meat, the family has a profit of more than 1 billion VND/year.
The civet farming model of Mr. Trinh Van Ke's family in Nga Thang commune is currently generating hundreds of millions of VND/year. Mr. Ke said: “Before raising civets, my family raised pigs on a scale of up to hundreds of pigs. By chance, while watching TV, I learned about many civet farming models that bring high income, low investment costs and little care, so I decided to switch to raising civets. After being licensed by the authorities, I renovated the pig pen into a place to raise civets and Bac Ninh province bought 9 civets for 17 million VND/head. However, at first, I had no experience, the purchased breed was not guaranteed, so the civets got sick and reproduced poorly, which was ineffective. At the beginning of 2022, I switched to raising civets. I bought 3 breeding civets, at the end of the year, 2 mother civets gave birth to 9 baby civets, I continued to raise them for breeding".
According to Mr. Ke, he will start selling mink for breeding and meat in 2024. Currently, his family's mink herd of 34 parent minks (28 females, 6 males) and 200 meat minks brings the family a profit of over 800 million VND/year.
It can be said that raising civets is a new model with high efficiency, less environmental pollution, does not require much care and low food costs but brings very high economic efficiency. Realizing that, recently many households in Hop Tien, Yen Khuong, Hoat Giang, Nga Thang communes... have boldly raised civets and other special animals such as bamboo rats, soft-shelled turtles, porcupines..., bringing high economic efficiency.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, raising specialty animals is developing strongly in many localities in the province, with 1,500 households licensed to raise species such as civets, bamboo rats, soft-shell turtles, mute turtles... with 225 thousand individuals.
