On the Shanghai Stock Exchange
The price of rebar for July delivery on the Shanghai Futures Exchange today (June 28) slightly decreased by 0.07% to 2,985 yuan/ton, while the contract for March 2026 increased by 19 yuan to 2,990 yuan/ton. Most other steel products on this exchange also increased slightly, except for wire rod, which decreased slightly.
In the raw materials market, the July iron ore futures contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange rose 1 yuan to 720.5 yuan/ton. The September contract, the most traded, also rose 0.64% to 705.5 yuan/ton.
On the Singapore Exchange, the July delivery price increased by 0.58 USD, to 93.32 USD/ton.
The dollar fell to a multi-year low after President Donald Trump expressed his intention to replace Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, raising concerns about the central bank’s independence. A weaker dollar makes dollar-denominated assets such as iron ore cheaper for investors holding other currencies.
In China, Premier Li Qiang said he would take strong measures to boost domestic consumption, which would provide further support for iron ore prices. However, gains were limited by high inventories and weak demand from China’s steel industry.
According to data from Chinese consultancy Mysteel, imported iron ore inventories for sintering rose for the third consecutive week to 12.3 million tonnes as of June 25. Meanwhile, consumption fell 1.5% from the previous week.
“Iron ore futures are at risk of hitting a record low year-to-date as ample supply and weak Chinese steel output weigh on market sentiment,” analysts from ANZ said.
Iron ore supplies from Australia and Brazil have surged, with Brazil’s Vale boosting exports due to the end-of-season peak, according to brokerage Everbright Futures. In addition, Rio Tinto’s Hope Downs 2 project, a joint venture with Hancock Prospecting, has received government approval to produce 31 million tonnes of ore a year, further boosting global supplies.
Dalian iron ore futures edged up but remained at a one-week low, as shipments to China from Brazil and Australia hit 30.1 million tonnes for the week, the highest since early 2025.
On the demand side, global steel output in May fell 3.8% year-on-year, according to the World Steel Association, reflecting persistent weakness in the construction and manufacturing sectors.
In another development in the US, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), imports of steel coil in May increased by 10.4% compared to the previous month, reaching 1.78 million tons, while total steel imports (both coil and semi-finished products) increased by 19.5%, reaching 2.48 million tons. However, in the first 5 months of 2025, steel coil imports decreased by 8.4% compared to the same period in 2024 to 9.14 million tons. Total steel imports reached 12.37 million tons, down 6.2% compared to the same period.
The main import sources of the US include Canada (2.46 million tons, -15.7% over the same period), Brazil (2.16 million tons, -2%), Mexico (1.59 million tons, -8.5%).
Imported steel products are mainly steel for the oil and gas industry, about 948 thousand tons (+14.9%), hot-dip galvanized steel, 831 thousand tons (-36%), and cold-rolled steel, 752 thousand tons (-12.2%).
