Musang King durian has been in harvest for about 10 days now and is being sold quite a lot, the price has also decreased a lot compared to 2 years ago.
Market research shows that durian prices have started to rise since mid-March, even though it is just the beginning of the harvest season. The Musang King variety is currently being purchased by traders at a wholesale price of VND380,000-430,000 per kilogram, the special variety (2-3 kilograms per fruit, 4-5 rice boxes). Thus, each 3 kilogram fruit costs over VND1 million.
If in 2022, fresh whole Musang King durian had a retail price of 500,000 - 800,000 VND/kg, now it is only 400,000 - 500,000 VND/kg. In addition to the selected type, Musang King durian grade 2 and grade 3 only cost 150,000 - 180,000 VND/kg, equivalent to Monthong durian.

At this price, Musang King durian is about 20% lower than the same period in 2023. But compared to the price in October 2023 - when durian prices dropped, this level is double.
A representative of the durian cooperative in Tien Giang said that the area of Musang King durian entering harvest has increased, resulting in higher output. However, the cultivation technique for this type of durian is more difficult than that of Ri 6 and Monthong, so not all gardens are effective.
A durian trader in the West - said that the price of Musang King grown in Vietnam has started to increase even though it is just the beginning of the season, due to high export while domestic supply is low. Especially in the March-April season, Musang King in the West has high quality and is favored by consumers.
In addition to high demand, according to cooperatives, the area planted with Musang King this season has decreased compared to the same period in 2023. The reason is that many gardeners have cut down the fruit after trial planting due to low productivity, unfavorable climate, and often dry or burnt segments.
The leader of the Vietnam Gardening Association (VACVINA) acknowledged that the area of Musang King durian cultivation is currently not large. This is a variety that requires high care techniques. In the future, when the durian industry's supply exceeds demand, high-quality varieties with delicious flavors will have a more competitive advantage.
Musang King originated from Malaysia, has been tested by people in the Central Highlands and Mekong Delta and has been bearing fruit for 4 years now. However, this variety has a lower yield than Ri6 and Monthong.
The main durian season in the West will begin to be harvested in April - May. In 2023, Vietnam's durian exports will peak in two periods; the first period will be in May - June with the peak harvest in the West and the second period will be in September - October with durian from the Central Highlands, mainly in Dak Lak . These are also expected to be important times for Vietnamese durian this year.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , the country currently has more than 110,000 hectares of durian, yielding nearly 850,000 tons per year, most concentrated in the Central Highlands, followed by the Mekong Delta, Southeast and South Central Coast.
In 2023, Vietnam's durian exports will reach a record 1 million tons, up 15.9% compared to 2022. Total export turnover will reach about 2.2 billion USD, 5 times higher than in 2022 and 10 times higher than in 2021.
Vietnamese durian has been exported to 24 markets, of which the export turnover to China accounts for over 99% of the total export turnover of Vietnamese durian. It is forecasted that in 2024 and the following years, China will continue to be the main consumer market of this fruit from Vietnam.
In 2024, Vietnam aims to achieve durian revenue of $3.5 billion, up 55% from last year, by penetrating deeper into the Chinese market.
China's acceptance of official imports of frozen durian could significantly increase the export value of this item, as the value of a container of frozen durian sent to China would be many times higher than that of fresh fruit.
Besides, the potential for exporting durian from Vietnam to the international market is still very large, especially when other countries only harvest durian seasonally while Vietnam can harvest all year round, creating an exclusive advantage for our country's durian.
