Latest durian price news
Over the past decade, Vietnam's durian area has skyrocketed from 32,000 hectares (2015) to nearly 179,000 hectares (2024), with an output of 1.5 million tons, 2.5 times higher than in 2020. The expansion beyond the planning of the Key Fruit Tree Project to 2025 and 2030 has caused many problems regarding quality, traceability and food safety.
After the Protocol with China (2022), durian exports reached 3 billion USD in 2024, but in the first 4 months of 2025, the turnover decreased by 66.6%, especially in China, it decreased by over 75%. The reasons include decreased demand, competition from Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and strict control requirements for Cadmium and Yellow O. While Thailand only inspected 30% of shipments, Vietnam still had to inspect 100%.
Since 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture has directed the verification of the cause of Cadmium, and implemented solutions in Tien Giang such as raising soil pH, using biochar and biological products to fix Cadmium, and planting metal-absorbing plants such as mint. A list of 60 safe fertilizers has also been published.
At the same time, the Ministry of Construction regulates the management of growing area codes, strengthens inspections of packaging facilities, upgrades laboratories, and negotiates to reduce inspections with China.
In the future, the durian industry will focus on deep processing, developing frozen products, building brands, and expanding markets to Japan, Korea, the EU, and the US.
