Rice export prices stable, Thailand under competitive pressure from Vietnam and India

Vietnam's rice export prices remained stable today, while Thailand faces challenges of falling demand and high prices, which could cause rice exports in 2025 to fall to their lowest level in many years.

In the export market on June 20, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam was maintained at 387 USD/ton. Meanwhile, 25% broken rice and 100% broken rice both decreased slightly by 1 USD/ton, down to 361 USD/ton and 317 USD/ton, respectively.

Compared to regional prices, Thailand's 5% broken rice price is still higher, at 396 USD/ton; Pakistan's is 392 USD/ton; India's is the lowest at 381 USD/ton.

According to the latest report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Thailand's rice exports in 2025 are expected to reach only 7 million tons, the lowest in many years. The main reason is that Indonesia has sharply reduced imports thanks to increased domestic production and large reserves since the beginning of the year.

Although Thai rice production may increase this year, opening inventories are low – the lowest since 2005. In addition, Thai white rice prices are higher than those of Vietnam, India and Pakistan, while a strong baht makes export prices even less competitive. This has led to a sharp decline in exports to key markets such as the Philippines and Malaysia, which fell 61% and 65% respectively in the first four months of the year.

However, Thailand still maintains its advantage in the high-end segment thanks to products such as fragrant rice and parboiled rice. Demand in markets such as the US, China, Iraq and South Africa remains stable, helping the country to somewhat balance pressure from mainstream markets.
