Export rice price
According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), Vietnam's rice export prices today (June 18) were generally stable, with only a few slight adjustments. The price of 5% broken rice increased slightly by 1 USD/ton to 387 USD/ton. Meanwhile, 25% broken rice and 100% broken rice decreased by 1 USD/ton to 361 USD/ton and 317 USD/ton, respectively.
On the other hand, the price of 5% broken rice from Thailand continued to decrease, currently at 396 USD/ton, while the same price from India and Pakistan remained unchanged at 381 USD/ton and 392 USD/ton.
Amid rising domestic rice prices in Japan and declining supply, two major rice exporting countries, Vietnam and Thailand, are seeing great opportunities from Japonica rice - a type of rice typical of Japanese taste and culinary culture.
Vietnam has just made an important step forward by exporting 500 tons of low-emission Japonica rice to Japan. This is an environmentally friendly rice variety that meets strict safety and sustainability standards. Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association Bui Ba Bong commented that Japan is in short supply and Vietnam has the potential to become a strategic partner in providing high-quality rice.
Meanwhile, Thailand is also gradually shifting from Indica to Japonica varieties to increase its presence in the high-end segment in Japan. Although rice exports to Japan have increased more than 1.3 times in the past 10 years, Thailand still faces challenges in import tariffs and increasingly fierce competition from countries in the region.
Currently, Japan imposes a high tariff of up to 341 yen per kilogram on rice imports exceeding the import quota, but the price of rice imported from Southeast Asia is still much lower than domestic rice. This allows Japanese businesses to continue to buy strongly, although it also poses a risk of facing a backlash from domestic farmers.
