Leverage contributes to increasing the value of OCOP products

The "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program is creating momentum to promote rural economic development in the province.

After 6 years of implementation, the OCOP Program in Lao Cai has not only spread widely but also aroused the spirit of innovation in agricultural production. From small-scale, manual production, many entities have boldly invested in modern processing technology and synchronous machinery to improve product quality and design and extend preservation time, contributing to increasing the value of local agricultural products.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Truong, Head of the Department of Rural Development and Poverty Reduction (Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lao Cai province), the active innovation of technology and investment in deep processing machinery by OCOP entities is an inevitable direction if they want to compete sustainably in the market.

A typical example is Traphaco Sa Pa One Member Co., Ltd., with a methodical approach, has invested in developing safe medicinal herb growing areas combined with the application of advanced extraction and preparation technology to produce functional foods and medicines from artichokes, tea, and Solanum procumbens. Up to now, the unit has 10 OCOP products with 3 to 5 stars, highly appreciated by consumers for their quality and applicability.

In the field of aquaculture, Le Trung Thuc business household (Sa Pa town) is also a testament to using technology as a solution to increase product value. From only raising commercial sturgeon and salmon, after investing in machinery and processing equipment, the facility has produced a series of new products such as: salmon floss, salmon sausage, sturgeon sausage, fish cakes, fish fillets, smoked fish, salmon and sturgeon crackers... Currently, the facility has 16 products that meet 3-star OCOP standards, all of which are vacuum-packed, refrigerated and widely distributed in the market inside and outside the province.

Another typical example is the Fancy Farm High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative (Thong Nhat Commune, Lao Cai City). With the desire to bring Lao Cai farmers' royal banana and red banana products to markets outside the province, this unit has implemented a model of producing dried bananas. Previously, the cooperative mainly dried by hand, each day only producing a very limited amount of products, with uneven colors. After investing in new drying technology, the products not only have a more beautiful appearance and taste, but the output has also increased significantly, meeting large orders from distributors in and outside the province. Currently, the cooperative's products have been recognized as achieving 3-star OCOP, expanding consumption in many provinces and cities and appearing on e-commerce platforms.

To date, the province has 267 OCOP products recognized, including 2 national 5-star products, 7 4-star products and 258 3-star products. Among these, many products are of high quality thanks to the application of technology in the production process, design and preservation.

In order to support OCOP entities in technological innovation, the province has had many support policies such as: 15 million VND reward for 3-star products, 30 million VND for 4-star products and 80 million VND for 5-star products. Along with that, the authorities organize training, consulting on brand building, market connection, transfer of production and processing techniques.

Not only increasing product value, processing technology also helps many OCOP entities expand their markets, increase revenue by 20% - 30% or more, and at the same time, contribute to changing the mindset of small-scale production to a modern, professional and sustainable direction.

Linking the OCOP Program with the implementation of Resolution 10 of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee on the strategy for developing agricultural commodities in Lao Cai province to 2030, with a vision to 2050, is also the right direction, focusing on developing key raw material areas such as tea, cinnamon, pineapple, livestock, etc. to create raw material areas so that OCOP products not only maintain stable quality but can also expand production scale.
