The Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project will be invested in the form of direct business investment, according to Resolution No. 01/2025/NQ-CP issued by the Government on June 1, 2025. Based on the proposal fromSun Group and after the capacity assessment process, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province decided to choose this group as the project investor. The investment capital for the project is VND 21,998 billion, implemented in 2 investment phases 2025-2027 and 2027-2030.

Speaking at the ceremony to hand over the project investment decision, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan - Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee said: "These are important strategic projects, contributing to ensuring infrastructure to serve APEC with a very large total investment. These are also fundamental and dynamic projects, contributing to a long-term role in shaping the development space, connection and integration of Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, Vietnam.
APEC 2027 is an opportunity for us to introduce a Vietnam that is innovative, integrated and rich in potential. Phu Quoc will be the place where Vietnam welcomes the world and today, with these investment decisions, we start that journey with the highest confidence, aspiration and sense of responsibility."
Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee also affirmed that it will accompany the investor throughout the project implementation process, ensuring progress and quality in accordance with the Government's direction, aiming to put the project into operation in time to serve the APEC 2027 Conference.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of Sun Group Southern Region Mr. Bui Thanh Trung pledged: “We are honored to continue to be trusted by the Government and localities to carry out strategic infrastructure projects of national significance. With experience in implementing transport infrastructure projects, we are committed to applying the highest standards of quality, progress and technology to create a modern, smart, environmentally friendly airport, worthy of being the international gateway of Phu Quoc pearl island”.
“This project is not just a simple transport infrastructure, but also a new symbol, a push to help Phu Quoc break through to become an international ecological, resort, financial and creative center after APEC 2027. We understand that time is running out, only 18 months left to bring the project to the finish line, and this will be a consistent commitment of Sun Group Corporation”, Mr. Bui Thanh Trung emphasized.
According to the approved plan, Phu Quoc International Airport will reach level 4E, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), allowing it to receive wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, 787 or Airbus A350. The expansion project has a total area of 1,050 hectares, increasing the airport's operating capacity to 20 million passengers per year, 4.5 times the current capacity.
The station design is inspired by the image of the Phoenix.
The runway infrastructure will be expanded with runway 1 and a new runway 2, 3,500 meters and 3,300 meters long, respectively, to meet the requirements of operating wide-body aircraft, increasing reception capacity and ensuring flight safety in all weather conditions. The parking system will be expanded to more than 100 positions, including 45 wide-body aircraft parking positions combined with a modern telescopic system.
Phu Quoc International Airport is envisioned as a new symbol of architecture and technology in the field of aviation infrastructure in Vietnam. The airport's T2 passenger terminal was designed by CPG Singapore - an internationally renowned architectural unit, under the leadership of architect Steven Thor, Executive Vice President of CPG Consultants. The terminal design is inspired by the image of the Phoenix, a bird symbolizing power and noble beauty. The project's distinct highlight is the integration of the world's leading modern, intelligent operating technology system, such as remote check-in, automatic baggage sorting, and biometric identification technology, which reduces check-in time to only 15-20 seconds per person.
In addition, the VIP terminal has also been newly invested in, ensuring the highest standards of security, protocol, and amenities, meeting the strict requirements of international events, including the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC 2027).
Modern technology is integrated: remote check-in, automatic baggage sorting, biometric identification helps shorten check-in time to only 15-20 seconds per person.
Currently, Phu Quoc International Airport is an important aviation gateway of the "pearl island", however, the infrastructure system is exceeding its design capacity, especially during peak tourist seasons. Faced with this situation, on June 1, 2025, the Government issued Resolution No. 01/2025/NQ-CP, agreeing on the policy of expanding Phu Quoc International Airport and assigning the People's Committee of Kien Giang province as the competent authority to implement the project and select qualified investors.
Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Mr. Uong Viet Dung, said: "This is a very important project, very large in scale and with urgent implementation time. We will closely coordinate with the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, as well as the investor to carry out the tasks, and at the same time coordinate with aviation consulting agencies to ensure the project's construction progress."
Previously, Sun Group also sent the Ministry of Construction a proposal to study and invest in the project to expand Phu Quoc International Airport. Sun Group is an experienced enterprise in the field of aviation infrastructure development, having succeeded with the international airport model at Van Don International Airport, Quang Ninh.
In particular, Sun Group has recently been officially approved to establish Sun PhuQuoc Airways, connecting the “pearl island” with economic centers across the country and the world. This affirms the attention of the Party, Government, and local leaders and the determination of the business community in enhancing Phu Quoc’s capacity to organize APEC 2027 and “give wings” and create a solid launching pad to turn Phu Quoc into a tourism-economic center worthy of the region.
