Di Linh: Summary of the Program of Production combining conservation and social security

(LĐ online) - On June 20, the Steering Committee of the Di Linh Program for Production, Conservation and Social Security (abbreviated as PPI Compact Di Linh) held a conference to summarize the period 2021 - 2025.

Attending the conference were Ms. Han Thi Ngan - Deputy Director of iLandscape Project Management Board , Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ; representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong province; leaders of departments, offices, and organizations of Di Linh district; along with managers, companies hosting component projects, cooperative units, local authorities and representatives of farmers.

Mr. Tran Nhat Thi - Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee delivered the opening speech at the conference.

The PPI Compact program in Di Linh district is financially and technically supported by the IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative, JDE Company and the Ilanscape Project implemented by the United Nations Development Program in Vietnam (UNDP) in coordination with the European Union, based on the public-private partnership mechanism between the People's Committee of Di Linh district and partners.

The program aims to enhance farmers' knowledge and techniques in responsible farming and production, through activities such as replanting old coffee gardens, limiting the use of underground water sources such as wells to irrigate coffee, using fertilizers and agricultural chemicals appropriately, diversifying crops; reducing costs, increasing household income.

The PPI Compact program in Di Linh district started to be implemented at the end of 2018 (phase 1, from 2018 - 2021), piloted in Tan Nghia commune. Since 2019, the People's Committee of Di Linh district has cooperated with IDH Organization, JDE Company and major coffee exporting companies such as ACOM, LDC, Sucafina and Intimex My Phuoc to implement the Program of production combined with conservation and social security. TMTconsulting Company is the main consulting unit for the program.

In the period of 2022 - 2025, Di Linh District People's Committee continues to accompany IDH Organization, JDE Group and 4 leading coffee exporting companies in Vietnam, including Intimex My Phuoc Company, Acom Company, LDC Company and Sucafina Company to implement the PPI Compact Program in 19 communes and towns.

The program focuses on the following contents: Forest protection and afforestation; Training to improve capacity for agricultural extension workers and farmers; Supporting sustainable farming activities and increasing income. In particular, focusing on the rational use of fertilizers and agricultural chemicals; diversifying crops; increasing intercropping to increase coverage; digging small ponds; using irrigation water economically and reasonably; supporting capacity building for cooperatives, farmer cooperatives, and agricultural service supply models. The contents implemented in the past have brought about effectiveness, contributing to raising awareness, action, and responsibility of farmers in coffee production.

In addition to the projects under the PPI Compact Program, Di Linh district is also receiving financial and technical support from IDH and JDE Group so that the district and coffee exporting companies can implement solutions to meet the requirements of the EU Deforestation Reduction Directive (EUDR).

Up to now, the PPI Compact Di Linh Program has been implemented synchronously and effectively in communes and towns; integrated with other national programs. After 4 years of implementation, PPI Compact Di Linh has achieved very practical results, contributing to the goal of sustainable development of the district's agriculture sector. The program has trained and improved production capacity for more than 350 agricultural extension officers, key farmers and more than 30,000 coffee producers in the area on sustainable farming and regenerative agriculture; provided technical guidance on land cover management, soil conservation, water-saving irrigation, agroforestry, integrated pest management, harvesting, processing and post-harvest preservation as well as updated regulations on coffee production without causing deforestation and forest degradation (EUDR).

Through the Program, thousands of key officials and farmers have participated in study tours and shared experiences at successful production models; 20,000 households have been supported with coffee replanting seedlings, intercropping seedlings and labor protection equipment.

Over the implementation period, the program has had many successes, moving towards creating a transparent coffee production area with clear origin, helping farmers reduce production costs and diversify their income sources. At the same time, it mobilized the participation of all parties in the coffee industry, from importers, roasters, processors, local authorities, domestic and international organizations, and the active participation of farmers.

At the conference, delegates reviewed and evaluated the results, advantages and difficulties, and shared lessons learned from practical experience during the program implementation period in Di Linh district. At the same time, they listened to opinions and recommendations from experts, corporations, businesses and companies related to the coffee industry.
